THE NEW DEAL
*On March 4, 1933
*He delivered his first inaugural speech
History
The New Deal
*Took place when President Franklin
Roosevelt took office in 1933
*He acted quickly to stabilize the economy
*Provide jobs
*Relief to those who were suffering
The Great Depression
*Economy was bad
*Many people were without jobs
*Many people were suffering

*A series of experimental projects and programs
*Aimed to restore dignity and prosperity of Americans
The New Deal
He said:
"First of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself"
*Gave people confidence
*Was not afraid to take bold steps
*To solve the nation's problems
His Speech
The Day After His Inauguration
*He declared a 4 day bank holiday
.To stop people from withdrawing their money
On March 9, 1933
*Congress passed the Roosevelt's
Emergency Banking Act
.It reorganized the banks
. Closed the ones that were insolvent

Three Days Later
*By the end of the month almost
3/4 of the banks had reopened
*Soon the deposits were more than the
withdrawals
*The banking crises has ended
The First Hundred Days
1st
*He asked Congress to end Prohibition
* At the end of the year Congress ratified the 21st Amendment
*Once again people were able to buy beer
In May
*He signed the Tennessee Valley Authority Act
*It enabled the federal government to build dams along the Tennessee River
*Dams controlled flooding
*And generated Inexpensive hydroelectric power
Also In May
*A bill that paid commodity farmers to not to grow crops for a season or more
*
Commodity farmers
produced things like wheat, dairy products, tobacco & corn
*This was done to end agricultural surpluses & boost prices

In June
*
National Industrial Recovery Act
was passed
.It guaranteed that workers would have the right to form a union
.& bargain collectively for higher wages & better working conditions
*He passed 12 other major laws
*Almost every American found something
to pleased about
*And something to complain about
*But it was clear that he did what he
promised in his
inaugural speech
*He took action

*Despite his best efforts, the Great Depression continued
*The economy was still bad
*Unemployment persisted
*And people grew angrier & more desperate
The Second New Deal
The Second New Deal
*Was a more aggressive series of federal programs

WPA
*Works Public Administration
*Provided jobs for unemployed people
*WPA projects were not allowed to compete with private
industry
*They built things like post offices, bridges, schools,
highways & parks
*Gave work to artists, writers, theater directors &
musicians
National Labor Relations Act
* Also known as the
Wagner Act
*Created the National Labor Relations Board
*Supervised union elections
*And prevented businesses from treating
their workers unfairly*
Social Security Act
*Guaranteed pensions to Americans
*Set up a system of unemployment insurance
*Helps care for dependent children & disabled
*He urged Americans to put their savings back in the banks
*He said "
that it is safer to keep your money in a reopened
bank than under your mattress"
