Green Day
Billie Joe Armstrong
Born on February 17, 1972, Billie Joe Armstrong is the guitarist and lead singer of Green Day. He was the youngest of six kids in a working-class family in Rodeo, California. When he was only ten, Bille Joe's dad, a truck driver and part-time jazz musician, died of cancer. This left him with his mother, who was a die-hard country music fan. As a child, Billie would sing at hospitals to cheer patients up. When he was 11, Billie got his first guitar on which he wrote his first song at 14. He founded Green Day with Mike Dirnt at 15 and has never looked back.
Tré Cool
Jason White, born November 11, 1973, is the newest member of the American punk rock band Green Day. He has appeared in most of their music videos but up until 2012, he was not an official member. Before being inducted as a full member, White played lead guitar in the majority of their live shows. He is married to Janna White and they had their first child named Sonny on February 1, 2013.
When they were 14 years old, childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Pritchard formed a band called Sweet Children in Rodeo, California. In 1989, drummer John Kiffmeyer, nicknamed Al Sobrante joined the band which changed its name to Green Day. Later that year, they released their first album 1,000 Hours, which was well-received in the punk world. Shortly after its release, Al Sobrante was replaced by Tré Cool as the new drummer.

Over time, Green Day gained a following through releasing albums 'Dookie' and 'Insomnia', with hit singles 'Basket Case' and 'J.A.R'. 'Nimrod', released in 1997, contained their first big hit, 'Good Riddance (Time of your Life)'. For two years, there was little mention of Green Day until their album 'Warning' with 'Minority', their highest-selling single of all-time.
In 2004, Green Day released 'American Idiot' (playing now), which skyrocketed to no. 1. It is arguably Green Day's trademark. In 2012, after having a 3 man band for 12 years, Jason White became a full member of the band after being a tourist guitarist since 1999.
Mike Ryan Pritchard was born on May 4 1972. His mother was a heroin-addict and Mike was given up for adoption when he was a baby. Acoustic guitar: (Armstrong and White)
The original guitar, which has six strings. The sound is amplified by the sound hole.
Bass guitar: (Dirnt) A stringed instrument played primarily with the fingers or thumb, by plucking, slapping, tapping or picking.
Drum Kit: (Cool) A collection of drums and other percussion instruments set up to be played by a single player.
Vocals: (Lead: Armstrong and backing: Dirnt) The act of producing musical sounds with the voice, and develops regular speech by the use of both tonality and rhythm.
Green Day's music is mostly punk rock with the occasional alternative song. Punk rock is very thick and guitar-dominated. The lyrics are usually anti-social. The guitar is amplified, with a heavy, crunch sound. The tempo is allegro (fast) and upbeat. The drums are loud. The bass isn't obvious, but provides depth. The texture is very thick. While the tempo might be similar, punk rock is very different to heavy rock (metal) which incorporates raspy, screaming vocals, extremely distorted electric guitar and heavy, violent drums.
