Obstacles
Kensuke was a doctor in war and his ship got
attacked by the americans. Everyone died but he
was the only one who survived on that boat and it kept drifting away and eventually it came to this island. The Americans dropped an atomic bomb on to Nagasaki in Japan and they say everyone
died so Kensuke believed that his family died
and didn’t try to go back to Japan.
"I think Kimi dead, Michiya dead. My mother
live there too, all my family. I think they
all dead."
Relationships
At first Kensuke didn't like Michael so much because he kept breaking rules. He told him not to go swimming but he did anyway because he was so frustrated and angry.
Michael got stung by jellyfish and Kensuke saved him and nursed him back to life. “You better now. My name is Kensuke. You better now." Kensuke said that after Michael woke up from the jellyfish sting. After that they were great friends. They played football together, painted and fished. He also
Introduction
Kensuke was a important character in the story because he had to develop the skills of living on an island and teaching them to Michael,
who also got stranded on the island.
He also had to take care of Michael
when he got in to trouble and
gave him food and shelter.
Obstacles
At first, Michael was a problem to Kensuke because he kept breaking rules. “No good. Fire, no good. You understand?” This quote shows Kensuke trying to make Michael stop lighting fires. He also said “No swim. Very bad. No swim. You understand?" to prevent Michael from swimming because he knew there was jellyfish in the water. But Michael still went swimming, despite his rule because he was so angry and didn't care about the rules made by Kensuke and got stung by jellyfish. Killer men also came before Michael came and Kensuke didn't want them on the island so he hid
and the killer men throught there was no one on the island and left.
Relationships
Kensuke also had a son called Michiya and a wife called Kimi. He said in the book "I go home often, I see my Kimi and my little Michiya in Nagaski." They were a very happy
family until the war. Kensuke heard
through the radio that the Americans
dropped a atomic bomb on
Nagaski where Kimi and
Michiya lived so he was very
depressed.
Why is he important?
Kensuke was a major part of this book because again, Michael wouldn't have survived without him. He also teached Michael the skills of surviving on a island such as fishing. He also talked about his wife Kimi and son Michiya, the war that he was a doctor in and how he also ended up on this island.
Michael also went swimming and got stung by jellyfish, so if
Kensuke didn't exist in the book,
Michael would have most likely
died. “The old man was bending
over me, his hand soothing
on my forehead."
How was Kensuke developed?
Before Michael got stranded on the island, Kensuke was extremely depressed because he was lonely except for the orangutangs. He most likely thought about his family often and how he thought they died from a atomic bomb. He also had to develop the skills of surviving on a island such as climbing trees and fishing for food. After Michael got stranded on the island, Kensuke was angry because he didn't follow the rules. When Michael went swimming and Michael got stung by jellyfish, He took care of him and they ended up being great friends.
Summary
So Kensuke was a important character because without him, Michael wouldn't have survived. He also had to overcome a lot of obstacles such as his family and war. He also had strong relationships with his family and Michael. Kensuke developed the skills needed to live on a island and ended up helping Michael to light a fire instead of putting it out.
