The story of
A Song of Ice and Fire
takes place in a fictional world where seasons last for years contributing to the circumstances. This series have already 5 books (ongoing).
The "First" Main Story
The main story chronicles a power struggle for the Iron Throne of Westeros after King Robert's death in the first book, A Game of Thrones.
The second story takes place on the northern border of Westeros, where an enormous, eight-thousand-year-old wall of ice defends Westeros from the Others, creatures believed to be mythical.
The "Second" Main Story
The third story is set on a huge eastern continent named Essos and follows the adventures of Daenerys Targaryen, the last known scion of House Targaryen.
Her story is isolated from the others until more POV characters join her in A Dance with Dragons.

The Stark family traces its lineage back to the First Men, who landed in Westeros more than 10.000 years ago and eventually forged a lasting peace with the continent's druidic natives, the Children of the Forest. The Starks still worship the Old Gods of their forebears at the heart tree in Winterfell.

This show was created for HBO, by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss;
It was filmed in a Belfast studio and on different locations like Northern Ireland, Malta, Scotland, Croatia, Iceland and Morocco;
After the release of the fourth season (the most recent one), HBO announced that this serie would have 2 more seasons (a fifth and a sixth).
The Targaryens came from the ancient civilization of Valyria, bringing dragons from the eastern continent and settling on the island of Dragonstone.
Targaryens ruled the royal house of the Seven Kingdoms, before House Baratheon took the Iron Throne, and the few surviving Targaryens fled into exile.

The House Baratheon was founded after the conquest of Aegon Targaryen by the conqeror's general Orys Baratheon. More recently, following Robert's Rebellion, tBaratheons of Storm's End seized the Iron Throne from the Mad King Aerys Targaryen and have ruled the Seven Kingdoms since.

The Lannisters descend in part from a group of Andal adventurers who invaded Westeros more than 6.000 years ago and settled ar Casterly Rock. The Lannisters ruled as kings in their realm until the Targaryens brought dragons to conquer the continent, placing all the lords of Westeros under control of the Iron Throne.
