Transcript of Importance of Biodiversity

Species richness
: the number of species in an area

All living things depends on: temperature, precipitation, altitude, soils and the main focus on existence of other species
What is Biodiversity?
: is the variety of life in a particular ecosystem which is also known as biological diversity.

-Canada’s home to about 140 000 to 200 000 species of plants and animals
What is species richness?
Biodiversity under attack
Classification Examples
What does extinct mean?
Extinct :refers to a species has died out and no longer is on Earth

In 200 years of human arrival in New Zealand , 30 species of bird were extinct
including giant moas

What if...
-Mosquito larvae are water insects, and play an important role in the aquatic food chain

The newly hatched, wingless, often worm like form of many insects

-Adult mosquitoes serve as food for birds, bats, and spiders

-even though we hate mosquitoes, their extinction would have a huge affect on the entire ecosystem

Species in risk are categorized in four categories:
Extinct Animal:
animal that no longer lives on earth
Importance of Biodiversity
Giant Moa
species that no longer exists in a specific area
species facing near extinction
-over harvested
-their homes were cut down
species that's likely to become extinct if factors not changed
Special concern:
species that may become threatened/ endangered because of group of factors

-climate change
-illegal hunting
-industrial impacts
-hunted alot
In conclusion...
Biodiversity is important for many things such as to keep life on earth because it stops any one species from throwing the balance of nature out of order so its our responsibility to take care of our biodiversity so its healthy.
-Leave habitats undisturbed especially nests
-help set up bird and bat homes
-leave plants undisturbed
-use natural ways for pest controls
-Monitor animal impacts to biodiversity
-Throw away hazardous things
-3 R's(Reduce,Reuse,Recycle)
-Drive less

FACT: Cats kill millions of birds each year in North America
