2 minutes... ? "The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch, but also in communion and intimacy, with Jesus Christ"...
Starting with the "initial" conversion of a person to the Lord …catechesis seeks to solidify and mature this first adherence.
It proposes to help those who have just converted "to know better this Jesus to whom the person has entrusted him/herself: to know his 'mystery', the kingdom of God proclaimed by him, the requirements and comments contained in his Gospel message, and the paths that he has laid down for anyone who wishes to follow him". The transmission of the faith is the goal of evangelisation.... which, according to the divine plan, is to bring all people through Christ to the Father in the Spirit (cf. Eph 2:18). The Christian FAITH is,
conversion to JESUS CHRIST,
full and sincere adherence to his person
and the decision to walk in his footsteps.
Faith is a personal encounter with Jesus Christ making, of oneself a disciple of him.
This demands a permanent commitment:
to think like him,
to judge like him
and to live as he lived.
In this way the believer unites himself
to the community of disciples and appropriates the faith of the Church. GENERAL DIRECTORY FOR CATECHESIS, 53 What is the "NEW EVANGELISATION?"
Blessed Pope John Paul II, in his first discourse to the bishops of Latin America (1983), sanctioned and defined the term which received great resonance in the Church:
"The commemoration of this half of the millennium of evangelisation will achieve its full meaning, if as bishops, with your priests and faithful, you accept it as your commitment; a commitment, not of re-evangelisation, but rather of a NEW EVANGELISATION; new in its
and expression." Inst. Laboris for Synod, 45 NEW EVANGELISATION; new in its
and expression. ? Directory for catechesis, 63 In this way catechesis, situated in the context of the Church's mission of evangelization and seen as an essential moment of that mission, receives from evangelization a missionary dynamic which deeply enriches it and defines its own identity.
The ministry of catechesis appears, then, as a fundamental ecclesial service for the realization of the missionary mandate of Jesus. for all of us! For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Jn 3:17 New awareness of the mission of the Church

experience and understanding of: FAITH CHURCH For Jesus, the purpose of evangelisation is drawing people into his intimate relationship with the Father and the Spirit. Inst. Laboris for Synod, 23. Doing it in a NEW WAY! What is the place of CATECHESIS
in the big PICTURE of EVANGELISATION? Accordingly, in conformity with this, evangelisation must be viewed as the process by which the Church, moved by the Spirit, proclaims and spreads the Gospel throughout the entire world. Evangelisation: – is urged by charity, impregnating and transforming the whole temporal order, appropriating and renewing all cultures; – bears witness amongst peoples of the new way of being and living which characterizes Christians; – proclaims explicitly the Gospel, through "first proclamation", calling to conversion. – initiates into the faith and the Christian life, by means of "catechesis" and the "sacraments of Christian initiation", those who convert to Jesus Christ or those who take up again the path of following him, incorporating both into the Christian community; – constantly nourishes the gift of communion amongst the faithful by means of continuous education in the faith (homilies and other forms of catechesis), the sacraments and the practice of charity; – continuously arouses mission, sending all the disciples of Christ to proclaim the Gospel, by word and deed throughout the whole world. 1 2 3 4 5 6 The Church evangelizes when, in virtue of the power of the Gospel proclaimed (cf. Rm 1:16), she takes every human experience and gives it rebirth through the death and resurrection of Jesus (cf. Rm 6:4), immersing each one in the newness of Baptism and life according to the Gospel and in the Son's relationship to his Father, so as to feel the power of the Spirit. Inst. Laboris for the Synod, 31 Questions for personal reflection and sharing: Inst. Laboris Synod, 31 EvANgelisATion... Evangelii Nuntiandi, 44 A means of evangelisation that must not be neglected is that of catechetical instruction. The intelligence, especially that of children and young people, needs to learn through systematic religious instruction the fundamental teachings, the living content of the truth which God has wished to convey to us and which the Church has sought to express in an ever richer fashion during the course of her long history. Directory for catechesis, 59 Moreover, without neglecting in any way the training of children, one sees that present conditions render ever more urgent catechetical instruction, under the form of the catechumenate, for innumerable young people and adults who, touched by grace, discover little by little the face of Christ and feel the need of giving themselves to Him. It is necessary above all to prepare good instructors- parochial catechists, teachers, parents- who are desirous of perfecting themselves in this superior art, which is indispensable and requires religious instruction. The methods must be adapted to the age, culture and aptitude of the persons concerned, they must seek always to fix in the memory, intelligence and heart the essential truths that must impregnate all of life. Truly the effort for evangelisation will profit greatly- at the level of catechetical instruction given at church, in the schools, where this is possible, and in every case in Christian homes- if those giving catechetical instruction have suitable texts, updated with wisdom and competence, under the authority of the bishops. No one will deny that this instruction must be given to form patterns of Christian living and not to remain only notional. Things are changing... or have changed!!! Catechesis plays
now a huge role! Often is the only time we
to transmit faith! So how to do it? And now what does this mean...? Experience... Humility vs condemnation Take the risk... And no one pours new wine into old wineskins.
