History
of the
Dental Hygienist
1905 Need for prevention in dentistry
She provided dental cleanings and prophalaxes to Dr. Fones' patients
Against the support of many Dentists, in 1906 Dr. Fones
hired his cousin, Irene Newman,
to be the first dental hygienist
in the world.
1900's Dr. AlFred C Fones was concerned
about the number of people losing their
teeth to decay and periodontal disease.
In 1913 Dr. Fones opened the Fones School of Dental Hygiene
in Bridgeport, Connecticut
34 women were accepted into the first class
Three main courses were taught:

Histology
Many Dental Hygiene students were schoolteachers, nurses
and doctor's wifes
Classroom lectures were given
by local dentists and dental instructors from Yale and Columbia University
Dentists from Japan came
to teach in Dr. Fones'
Dental Hygiene Program
Anatomy
Clinical Practice
Students used a vat of boiling water as the "sterilization center"
The first class of Dental Hygienists
graduated in June 1914

In 1945 there was a huge push for
Oral Heath Prevention.
In 1941, University of Toronto starts the first Dental Hygiene program In Canada .
Dr. Fones was convinced that removal of plaque, calculus and sugared substances from teeth would reduce or prevent tooth loss
This is where the philosophy of teaching
dental disease prevention began
Dr. Fones wanted Dental Hygienists to provide outreach services to those who could not afford dental care.
Today Dental Hygiene Programs are 2 - 3 years in length. The topics range from; Microbiology, Biology, Ethics, Embriology, Pathology, Radiology, Nutrition and Clinical Practice
-Remove soft and hard deposits from teeth

-Teach patients how to practice good oral hygiene

-Provide other preventive dental care

-Examine patients' teeth and gums, recording the presence of diseases or abnormalities

-Help patients develop and maintain good oral health and general health

-Make a diagnosis and prepare clinical and laboratory diagnostic tests for the dentist to interpret

Dental Hygiene graduates can continue their education in many different directions:

- Dental Hygiene Degree
- Masters of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene
- Masters of Dental Science Degree
- Doctorate in Oral biology
Dental Hygienists can practice in
clincial practice, public health,
nursing homes, hospitals, education
as well as in administration.
Dental hygienists rank among the
fastest growing occupations.

Dental Hygienists often work part time
and the flexible scheduling make the profession attractive to women who have children.
