Katelyn Patenaude Fireworks What exactly is a firework? Where and when were
the first fireworks invented? Who were the first Europeans to master fireworks? What are the components of black powder? What type of chemical reactions occur in fireworks? What are ratios of the components of black powder? What three processes cause fireworks to emit light? A firework is a rocket in its simplest form. It is a tube of rocket fuel that when burned produces gases that are forced out of the rocket causing it to shoot away from the earth. There are chemicals in the nose of the rocket which explode to produce the colors. The first fireworks were invented in Ancient
China around 1,000 years ago. It is believed that the Italians were the first Europeans to master fireworks. -Combustion reactions are the type of chemical reactions that occur in fireworks. A combustion reaction occurs between a fuel and an oxidizing agent that produces energy. The components of black powder consist of potassium nitrate, charcoal (carbon) and sulfur. The ratio of the components of black powder
are 75:15:10 by weight. The three processes that cause fireworks to emit light are Incandescnece (black body radiation), atomic emission and molecular emission. What types of elements are responsible for the colors of fireworks? The types of elements responsible for the colors of firewroks are metallic compounds. What is responsible for the whistling sound that often accompanies fireworks? The whistle sound that accompanies fireworks is produced when the oxidizer and organic salt burn a layer at a time and emit gas in spurts. When the compounds are contained in a narrow tube the pulses of escaping gas produce the whistling sound. What are the component parts of modern fireworks? From bottom to top the components of fireworks consist of a launch tube, lift charge, fuse, black powder, break, stars, and time delay fuse. What does each component of fireworks do? The launch tube is a tube made of steel which the firework shell is launched from. The lift charge is the explosive at the bottom of the firework shell that propels the shell into the air. The fuse consists of wires that connect the firework to the master control board. The black powder is the explosive chemical. Breaks are the seperate compartments in a firework shell that contains a charge and stars. The stars are lumps made of perchlorate, black powder and chemical compounds that create colors emitted.
