LiDAR Applications You Can Use
Transcript of LiDAR Applications You Can Use
What is it?
You have a
3D point cloud.
could utilize LiDAR?
What's the future of LiDAR?
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)
Similar to RADAR and SONAR
Collects a 3D point cloud
Accurate and Precise
Applications are limitless
Inertial Mesurement Unit (IMU)
measures a craft's velocity and orientation (roll, pitch, yaw)
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver
Connects to GPS satellites
What do you need to acquire LiDAR data?
Sends and collects the laser pulses and saves them with their time stamp
Iowa Real-Time Network
...but no classification!
...Now, what can you
do with it?
Making LiDAR Accurate
Minor adjustments to the data may be necessary.
If scanner is calibrated correctly, proper flight procedures are followed, and IMU and GPS data is processed properly, adjustments should be minimal.
Interact with your data
To some degree...
Canopy heights and biomass totals can be estimated
Forest biodiversity can be modeled
Accurately map coastline to mitigate erosion
Determine appropriate placement of solar panels on rooftops
Autonomous vehicles and obsticle avoidance
Space exploration (Mars and the moon)
Detailed DEM, slope, and aspect map
Combine with yeild maps
Determine where more/less high priced fertilizer needs to be applied
NERC 1&2 compliance
Combined with weather data in PLS CADD
More accessible to all those who make use of the data
Future space exploration
Increased adoption in new fields
3D Elevation Program and National Digital Elevation Program
More powerful software to speed up processing and automation
Handheld devices that allow the general public to navigate their world in 3d
Self-driving vehicles that will be nearly impossible to crash
LiDAR sensors are becoming more powerful, smaller, and lighter
Reduce costs by eliminating the need for pilot in the air
Program a trajectory and let go or pilot from the ground
Access areas that are dangerous or unreachable from helicoptors and airplanes

And, unless you're doing terrestrial LiDAR scanning...
...you're going to need a vehicle to carry it all.
You may also need...

Applications You Can Use
Oil & Gas
High accurate bare earth DEMs and surface models.
Coupled with magnatrometers and leak detectectors
High consequence areas
Class 3 and 4
Cheaper, as accurate, higher data density, and more efficient than aerial photos and a survey crew.
Map anywhere: natural, man made, and hard to access locations.

Applications designed to sync data in real time with mobile devices
Move beyond just Google Maps and Street View, lidar can assist in a total 3d immersion to explore and navigate from
