Transcript of What is an endangered species?

Science Project:
What is an endangered species?
Why do
species
become endangered?
How does endangered species affect others in that ecosystem?
How many species are
we loosing?
Who is responsible
for endangered
species?
An endangered species is one whose numbers are so small that it is at risk of extinction.
Leather back Turtles, Mountain Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Fin Whales, Indian Elephants and Snow Leopards are some of the critically endangered Species.
Endangered Species affect all of us because everything is linked together in a food chain. If one thing goes extinct, the whole food chain starts to break.

Not only that, plants and animals have provided humans with food, clothing, energy, medicines and structural materials.
Why are we
protecting endangered
species?
What are we doing to prevent species from becoming extinct?

Endangered Species
266 species have recovery plans currently under development.
Worldwide, there are more than 1,000 endangered species.
In United States, there are 1151 endangered or threatened species. 735 are plants and 496 are animals.
There are over three thousand endangered species in the world.
The Fish and Wildlife Services reported 2,054 species worldwide that are endangered or threatened. 1,436 exist in the U.S. alone.
There are eighteen species of bat in the Britain and all of them are endangered.
Between 0.01 and 0.1% of all species will become extinct each year.
There are 8.7 species on earth and yet 86% are still unknown.

Destruction of Habitat
A habitat is an ecosystem a specie needs to live in. Humans destroy precious habitat for their needs.
Pollution
Pollution can be as revolting and obvious as an open dump, or as invisible as the chemicals sprayed on our crops and lawns. Pollution alters the fragile balance of ecosystems and brings death to many animal populations.
Hunting and fishing
Many animals are over-hunted because their meat, fur and other parts are very valuable.
Exotic species
When animals or plants arrive into a new habitat from a foreign place they sometimes introduce diseases native species can't fight .
Climate Change

Today, solutions to problems in agriculture production in tropical countries, reliance on petrochemicals, and the cure for cancer may lie in organisms not yet discovered. It would be shame to lose these benefits without even knowing we had them.

We don’t know exactly what’s out there.

It’s a big complex world and we discover new species to science all the time.
So if we don't know how many species we are losing we can only guess. Scientists have estimated that if there are 100,000,000 different species on earth and the extinction rate is 0.01% per year. This means at least 10,000 species go extinct every year.

For watching our presentation!!!
All human-being.
It doesn't mean each person is responsible for every species in the world. It means each person has a responsibility, at least, for any species in your environment. If there are endangered species around you, those are your responsibility. Others would be the government. As we know, they must take control everything in their country.
If enough species go extinct
the

food chain will break down
and we will be next. Every species has a part to play in every ecosystem and removing species can cause catastrophic effects on other species and then other species and so on.Certain scientists keep repeating that if we don't save the animals, how will we be able to save ourselves? A better knowledge of animals gives us a better understanding of our own species.
Species are often effective when used against each other. For example, bats and predator insects can help solve agricultural issues without the use of harmful pesticides.
Start composting in your backyard garden. It eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers which are harmful to animals and humans, and it benefits your plants. Just by doing this, you are helping a lot in the ecosystem.

Save Rhinos by Selling their Horns!
Rhinoceros horns have been prized ingredients in Chinese medicines for thousands of years. About 8 horns costs more than 650,000!! And by 1995 there were only 2,410 rhinos left. Every year over the past five years skilled marksmen would kill the rhinos with one shot from high-caliber rifles. Or they shoot paralyzing darts at the rhinos from helicopters — then take the horns and leave the stunned animals to bleed to death. Last year alone, 668 rhinos were killed in South Africa.
People nowadays hunt or kill any species they see and we also destroy their habitat without knowing that we’re doing it. Global warming for example, we create pollution and heat which melts down ice in the Arctic where polar bears live. Without their habitat they may die and soon it’s possible for them to become extinct.
Concerned citizens and scientists worldwide have passed laws to protect and keep endangered species. A few of the laws forbid hunting, while others decrease land development or create special preserves as endangered species habitats.
What is the difference between an endangered species and a threatened species?
In simple terms, endangered species are at the edge of extinction now. Threatened species are likely to be at the edge in the near future. All of the protections of the act are provided to endangered species. Many, but not all, of those protections also are available to threatened species. However, the Service has the authority to determine which protections should apply to each threatened species.
