Who is Neils Bohr?
His full name is Niels Henrick David Bohr.
Niels was born on October 7, 1885, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
He died on November 18, 1962.
He lived all his life in Copenhagen.
The chemical element bohrium (Bh) is named for him.
One of Niels Bohr's greatest contribution was the atomic model.
The Bohr model shows the atom as a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons.
Bohr was the first to discover that electrons travel in separate orbits around the nucleus and that the number of electrons in the outer orbit determines the properties of an element.
Niels' dad, Christian Bohr was a professor of Physiology.
His mom, Ellen, came from a well educated family.
Niels had one younger brother named Herald and an older sister called Jenny.
He got married in 1912 to Margrethe Norlund and they had 6 children, only 4 survived.
Niels went to Gammelholm Grammar School until 1903.
He wasn't the best student
In most classes he would finish about third or fourth in classes of about 20 students
He went to Copenhagen University and in 1909, he got his master's degree in Physics.
In 1911, Niels got his Doctor's degree.
He also won the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics.
The quantum theory is the modern physical theory concerned with the absorption of energy by matter and with the motion of material particles.
The quantum theory is necessary for the special situation where very small quantities are involved like on the scale of molecules, atoms, and elementary particles.
Niels Bohr helped found CERN, Europe's great particle accelerator and research station.
With Adolf Hitler's rise in power, Bohr was able to offer German Jewish physicists refuge at his institute in Copenhagen.
During World War II, Bohr, fearing being arrested by the Germans, escaped to Britain.
He then went to the US to work on the Manhattan Project at the Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico.
The Manhattan Project lead to the development of the first atom bomb.
Niels Bohr was really good in physical education.
He was an excellent soccer player.
