Transcript of Child Neglect

Why are we not doing anything about it? 5 children die every day in the US from neglect and abuse. Neglect is a failure to provide adequate support, supervision, nutrition, medical, dental, or surgical care In 2005, an estimated 1,460 children died as a result of abuse or neglect 899,000 children were confirmed to be victims of abuse or neglect in the US in 2007 Improve estimation accuracy and help deliver the evidence “Exaggerating the severity of abuse endangers children” (Besharov) Children are not receiving services to prevent further abuse No proof of child neglect The child was only "in danger of being harmed." (qtd. in Grapes) We must prevent reoccurence of abuse as well as providing services before problems become severe. We wait until it gets so bad we have to step in Agencies usually avoid these cases. Aug. 11, 2001 There is an enormous spending gap in prevention and protection Agencies need to increase the time spent on these cases and search through them extensively In 2000, $2.9 billion of $15.9 billion was spent protecting children Between 60-65% of all reports are closed after an initial investigation. Another 30% of uninvestigated cases involved emotional abuse and neglect. Situations that need our attention never recieve it. The direct cause of child neglect and abuse is incompetent parenting 252 unrestrained children younger than age 5 died annually Parents are the major reason Neglect is associated with parental alcohol or drug abuse. Neglect is the harmful factor to children's lives. We are not doing enough to protect children A response needs to occur today http://espanol.video.yahoo.com/watch/1408263/4847111 Child Neglect
