Domestic Ferrets
Sydney Iverson Animal Management hr.1
10/21/13
Breed Intro/History
The domestic ferret belongs to the Mustelidae and the genus Mustela, which includes weasels, ermines, mink, and polecats. There are four subgenus of Mustela; all members of this genus have long, limber, slender bodies.
Physical Description
Long, limber, slender bodies
Short legs and small, rounded ears
Have rather long, oval-shaped heads and a pointed snout
Eyes are bright and clear
Anatomy/Physiology
Ferrets are vertebrates
The heart rate depends a lot on the activity level of the ferret, but a rate of 200 to 300 beats per minute is considered normal
The heart of the ferret is a cone-shaped, muscular organ that is divided into four separate chambers
Feeding/Nutrition
Major part of their diet should consist of a high-quality commercial dry cat/kitten food. (it's important that the cat food contains approx. 35% animal protein)
Young, growing ferrets should be fed all they will consume, twice a day
Need water at all times
With food containing high-cereal protein, the ferret is forced to consume large amounts of food in order to meet his nutritional needs. It is best to buy foods rich in animal protein, so then the ferret doesn't have to eat as much and is better nourished
Housing/Bedding
It would be best for a single ferret to have cages that are 24 in. wide, 24 in. long, and 14 in. high
If there is a way to escape from a cage, a ferret will find it. All materials should be of good quality and latches on the doors should lock securely
General Health Care
Breeding/Reproduction
Under natural conditions, ferrets are seasonal breeders
The easiest way to breed one pair of ferrets is to keep them outside year-round
Large-scale breeding- colonies of 30 to 1000 females- requires substantial time and financial investment
Grooming
To groom a ferret, you need to clean their ears, maintain and cut their nails, and bathe them
To clean a ferret's ears, just clean with cotton swabs and an ear cleaning solution
To cut a ferret's nails, just use a cat-type nail cutter and cut just short of the vein
To brush it, use a nylon brush to comb out loose hairs. Brushing also stimulates the skin of the ferret
To bathe it, fill sink with lukewarm water. Shampoo the water. Then rinse
Training
Fun Facts/Misc.
Ferrets are not rodents
Ferrets are the third most popular pet in the U.S.
Ferrets sleep an average of 18-20 hours per day
A ferret develops their full personality in about 8-10 weeks
Ferrets are comfortable in spacious cages
A newborn ferret is so small it can fit into a teaspoon
Economic Costs and benefits
Description of Ideal Owner
Vaccinations
Vaccinations against rabies is recommended even if your ferret never goes outside
Any vaccination has a low risk of producing an adverse vaccine reaction. Staying at the vet's office for 30 minutes after the vaccination is a good idea
The cost of a ferret originally ranges from $65 to more than $250
You can expect to pay another $150 to $350 for vaccinations, veterinary examinations, and basic supplies
If your ferret has not been neutered or spayed, it costs roughly $46 to $100
Descenting your ferret costs $100-$270
Ferret proofing your home costs about $85-$155
It is recommended to just use cat food for your ferret, so food costs
A roomy cage is $100-$300
Monthly costs of food for your ferret is about $10-$20, depending on your ferrets size and eating habits (and what brand of food you buy)
New owners should adopt older ferrets, not kits (baby ferrets)
Females are more active and males are more cuddly, so that might play a part in buying the ferret that is best for you
You should have enough time in your schedule to play with your ferret. Ferrets should be out to play each day at a minimum of 4 hours
If there are any young children in your home, it is recommended not to get a ferret. The children tend to cause ferrets to have anxiety and may lead to rough play or fear-biting and general squirminess
How To Train Your Ferret
Spray Apple Bitter Spray wherever the ferret tends to bite, whether it be people or furniture
give your ferret a Ferretone treat every time he goes potty in the litter box
DO NOT ever spank, slap, or kick the ferret if it does not always go in the litter box
It is best to start training your ferret when they're young, so they will learn quicker

Ferrets come in a range of colors, but common variations include white with pink eyes, sable, cinnamon, and chocolate. White patches on the throat or toes are common.
The younger a ferret is when you start to train her to use a harness, the easier it will be. You can start harness training when your ferret is as young as ten weeks old. For safety, start the training inside. Put a harness on your ferret for three to five minutes at a time, and give her a treat while she has it on. As she gets more used to the harness, slowly increase the amount of time she wears it, and remember to always give her a reward
The ferret's scent is partially due to the natural oils from the ferret's skin, so a bath may temporarily reduce the musky scent. However, because the bath strips the skin and fur of these oils, the bath actually stimulates an increase in the production of these skin oils, so the musky scent may actually become stronger for a couple of days after the bath.
Female ferrets are polyestrous. They are able to have multiple “heats” per season
Ferrets have a very short, simple digestive tract which limits the amount of food they can eat at any one time. They eat small, frequent meals, compared to other animals of their size. Because of the relative inefficiency of their digestive system, they need to get the most out of every meal.
You must vaccinate your ferret for canine distemper. It is considered a serious viral disease in ferrets, with mortality rates reaching 100%. A kit receives the first canine distemper vaccination at 6-8 weeks of age every 3-4 weeks until he is 14 weeks of age

The average male ferret has about 2 ounces of blood in his body, and the average female ferret has less than 1.5 ounces of blood in her body
The ferret skeletal system is made up of roughly 200 bones
The cage should be kept in a cool, shaded, dry area away from direct sunlight. Ferrets have poorly developed sweat glands and cannot tolerate temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They could easily die of heatstroke
