Chlorine was discovered in 1774 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele. He obtained it through the reaction of his mineral Pyrolusite (MnO2) with Hydrochloric Acid (Hc1) then known as muriatic acid. Scheele thought the resulting gas contained oxegon. Sim Humphry Davy confirmed Chlorine to be an element in 1810, in which he also named the element.

Chlorine is an chemical element with the symbol C1 and the atomic number of 17. Chlorine is in the Halogen group and is the second largest Halogen following fluorine. The element is a yellow-green gas understanderd conditions, where it forms diatomic molecules. Chlorine has the highest electron affinity and the third largest electronegativity of all the reactive elements.
