An overview of how Water Resources used out-of-the-box thinking to meet a crazy deadline and turned it into a full-featured GIS workflow that spanned desktops, servers and the web.
The Task

Historical Workflow
"How it used to be done..."
Each H&H model pre- and post-processed manually.
Data conversion performed using a combination of Notepad and Excel.
Inconsistent documentation (depending on engineer, mileage may vary).
Utilizing sub-consultants required them to be in-office and plugged into the network
IT's greatest nightmare
The problem...
3 month deadline from project kick-off.
8 study areas to be processed.
Need to collaborate with and manage 5 sub-consultants.
An unknown amount of levee breach simulations would be required.
An unknown amount of data to be managed and documented.
GIS to the rescue!
The H&H software used by the engineers have one thing in common:
"The ultimate inspiration is the deadline."
To utilize a common software platform to manage and process the mass amount of information that needs to be shared across multiple incompatible software suites. Processes and workflows can be

developed to improve efficiency and accuracy while minimizing downtime.
But what does
it mean?
The GIS team was given a crash course on the various pieces of software involved and tapped into the collective knowledge of the team to better understand what each one does. Once the pieces were dissected, a few trends started to surface...
Most H&H software kept the input and results as plain text files.
If the results were stored in a binary format, there were existing API's that could be utilized to output the format into something that was easily digestible by Python.
Post-processing of data files could be automated using web-services called from a web interface.

Notify project managers, study-area team and Independent QC (IQC) via e-mail updates as processes were completed.
