TP-CASTT is a method for analyzing poetry in writing that you will be using on your ICE on Monday as well as English classes in the future.

Take a look at the title and try to decide what the poem might be about. Make a prediction.

Remember, the poet chose that title for a reason--so what IS the reason?
PARAPHRASE-restating the plot (the literal meaning) of the poem.

Where does the poem take place? Who is the speaker?Who was involved? Were there any conflicts?

The first step toward analyzing *anything* you read is putting what you read into words you understand.
Consider any deeper or extended meanings. Look at the words as individual pieces of the poem.

What are the associated emotions that are connected to specific words?

Poetic devices: imagery, metaphor, simile, personification, rhyme patterns, rhythm, diction, alliteration, etc.
(ALL of the elements of poetry we have discussed)

Describe how these elements add meaning to the poem.
Identify the attitude(s) present in the poem and then identify the literary devices (including diction) that help express the tone.
Shift = changes

* tone
* feelings
* the use of poetic devices
* tense
* structure--stanzas, line length, punctuation

Step Six: T is for Title

I know, I know--we already did the title, right? But that was before you knew what the poem meant! :) Go back and reconsider the title. Does it have any new significance?
Theme is found in poetry using 3 steps:

1. Reconsider the plot. What is the poet saying?

2. List the subject of the poem.
Begin with the obvious, literal subjects, and then proceed down your list to the more abstract subjects (concepts like "innocence" or "longing").

3. Write one sentence explaining what the poet is saying about the subject. What lessons are they teaching their readers?

Is the theme of the poem universal?--applicable to everyone, in every period in history, everywhere?
Complete the TP-CASTT chart for the poem "". Tomorrow in groups, you will write a two paragraph (14 sentence) analysis of the poem.

*This is what you will be doing on your semester exam*
Step One: T is for TITLE
Step Two: P is for Paraphrase
Step Three: C is for Connotation
Step Four: A is for Attitude
Step Five: S is for Shifts
Step 6: T is for Title (again)
Look at the title once again

Was your prediction correct, or after reading and analyzing the poem further, do you have a new insight into the meaning behind the title?

Write a two paragraph analysis for the poem
"My Star" by Robert Browning. You have 20 minutes

What would I look for if this were
your exam?

Fluid sentence structure
No use of the first and second person pronouns
No personal opinion
To make an analysis of specific elements in the poem and discuss how those elements relate to each other to support your thesis of what the poem "means."

Forces you to formulate an interpretation of something someone else has written.

Nothing causes a person to make an extra effort to understand difficult material like the task of writing about it.
What's the Point?
"My Star" by Robert Browning
All that I know
Of a certain star,
Is, it can throw
(Like the angled spar)
Now a dart of red,
Now a dart of blue,
Till my friends have said
They would fain see, too,
My star that dartles the red and the blue!
Then it stops like a bird; like a flower, hangs furled:
They must solace themselves with the Saturn above it.
What matter to me if their star is a world?
Mine has opened its soul to me; therefore I love it.
T- The first time you consider the title, simply make a prediction in your mind. Take some pre-writing notes on what you believe the poem will be about. Use these notes later, when you will write your final conclusion about the meaning and function of the title.
P- Did the writer summarize the events within the story? Are these events accurate? Did they discuss the speaker's star and what it does and mean to him/her?
C-Did the writer discuss the following elements of poetry:
approximate rhyme
A- Did the writer state the speaker's tone toward the subject, a star? The speaker's attitude is proud, almost protective.
Shifts- No obvious shifts throughout the poem
T- Did the writer discuss the meaning of the title? Browning's title, provides readers with the subject of the poem. It also alludes that the speaker believes the star to belong them, making it personal.
T- Did the writer state the theme of the poem in one sentence and also provide information on its universality?

Annotate the poem (4 min)
Step Two:
In your group, complete the TPCASTT chart for "Boy at the Window" by Richard Wilbur.
Step Three:
Write at least a two paragraph analysis of the poem using the notes you took with your group. Write this on the back of your annotated poem. Remeber to ANALYZE and provide direct quote examples.
