Destruction of Marine Ecosystem
MARINE ECOSYSTEM
Marine ecosystem is a biological system composed of living marine organisms and their environment.
Many countries around the world have more biodiversity in his coasts that in their continental part.
Marine ecosystems are an important source of food and employment. (Global Economy)
EXAMPLE (ECUADOR)
Economy
Nutrition
Biodiversity
EXAMPLE (Shrimp export in Ecuador)
Destruction of Marine Ecosystem
Destruction of the marine ecosystem is generated by the pollution of oceans, lakes and rivers.
Pollutants can cause a wide range of impacts in the marine environment and dire consequences predicted for the survival of marine flora and fauna.(
Edward, 2000).
Polluting Agents
Hydrocarbons
Plastics
Herbicides/Pesticides
Pollution of the food chain
Who are the most affected?
• The most vulnerable organisms are those found on the sea surface or shorelines.(
Hogan,2010)
Seabirds are particularly at risk. Some species, and penguins in particular, respond well to cleaning but may not survive for long(
Hogan,2010)
Global statistics
Every year 8 millions of tons of garbage are generated (Greenpeace, 2015)
It's equivalent to throwing one garbage truck per minute.!(Greenpeace, 2015)
In 30 years there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.(Ambientum, 2017).
Plastic Pollution in the World's Oceans
Conclusion
The pollution of the marine ecosystem generates disastrous consequences for the economy, health, commerce and tourism of a country.
There are several types of pollutants, but the most destructive to the marine ecosystem are hydrocarbons and plastics.
Pollution can generate extinctions, mutations and even death.
