Day 31 - Push and Pull
What makes bicycles go uphill?
What makes a baseball slugger's home run sail over the right-field?
What makes a book move from your book bag to your desk?
Everywhere we look, things are in motion-cars, planes, balls, etc.
In our experiments we've flown air trolleys on lines, rolled cars down ramps, and put our own bodies in motion.
We've thought through lots of situations in which people, toys, vehicles, and other things were in motion.
We know some things can be put into motion with a push.
When you push on an object, you are exerting a
force
on that object.

When you push on a shoe, book, or door with your hands you are using the weight of your body to exert a force on the object.
A force is an
interaction
.

There is no such thing as a push without something to push on. Thus, a force can happen only when one object pushes on another object.
A force is a pushing interaction between two objects.
The unit of force in the metric system is the
newton
.
The symbol for newton is an uppercase N.
