Transcript of Edgar Allen Poe

Born as Edgar Poe of Boston. Mother died and father abandoned him. He was taken in by John and Frances Allan. He at age 17 entered the University of Virginia.
He was only given a small allowance by Allan,
which led him into debt. This scared him, so
he attempted to regain his money through gambling. This put him into greater debt and
began to drink his sorrows away. His debt grew to twentyfive hundred dollars by te
end of the school semester. Allen angrily withdrew Poe from school. Poe soon ran
away from home. Poe persuaded a printer in Boston to issue some of his early works. He was noble and modest, he signed his entry "By a Bostonian" unable to support himslelf, Poe enlisted in the united states army enlisted as Edgar A. Perry and the age of 22 while he was only 18. The same year, 1827, he released his first book. Which was a 40-page collection of poetry. Only 50 copies were printed and the book recieved virtually no attention. Even when he did write a good peice to be published and sold, the Publishers often pirated the works instead of buying them from the Americans. Poe was first awarded a prize in October of 1833 for his short story, "Ms. Found in a Bottle". This story earned him some respect and landed him a job. He still had his drinking problem, which led to his boss catching and firing him. ~This is Whack~ Returning to Baltimore, Poe secretley married Virginia, his cousin, on September 22, 1835. He was 26 and she was 13 though she was said to be 21 on the marriage certificate. Anyways... Edgar allan poe wrote his stories with him usually as the main character, often representing a "mad genius" or "tormented artist" and continued to exploit his personal struggles. ~Back in the day~ He was mostly recognized as a literary critic. Some would even call him "the most discriminating, philosophical, and fearless critic upon imaginative works." What we think of him now.. Poe was a writer of fiction and became one of the first American authors of the 19th century but was more popular in Europe than in the United States. On his Deathbed... A man found Edgar in the streets dilerious one night. From there he was taken to Washington College hospital, where he died on October 7, 1849. Most facts point to him being drunk becuase of his nature and him never becoming coherent in the hospital.
