Transcript of Writing News Reports

Writing News Reports
PURPOSE: A news report answers the who, what, where, when, why and how of a situation by giving the reader a detailed and unbiased account of what happened.
QUOTES: Always include two quotes in your news report
Direct Quote: Dr. Smith says that "smoking is more addictive than chocolate or caffiene."
Indirect Quote: Dr. Smith says that smoking is a leading killer in Canadians.
STYLE: Use descriptive language. Remember, you're explaining this event to the reader, so you want
to make it as realistic and understandable as possible.
POINT OF VIEW: Remember to write in third person. Do NOT use 'I' or 'we.' Be OBJECTIVE, not SUBJECTIVE
OBJECTIVE means providing an unbiased
account of the event. You DO NOT include
your opinion.
SUBJECTIVE means telling the story
from your perspective. This means
the story will have a bias.
