TPCASTT
Title
Think about the title before reading the poem. This is your first impression of the poem.


Paraphrase
Explain the poem into your own words. Summarize what you think it means.
List/highlight/ circle or underline all of the words that you don’t know the meaning of and then defining them using a dictionary.


Connotation
the emotion or feeling associated with a piece of writing. Contemplate/consider the poem for meaning beyond the literal. Think outside the box.


*Does the title give any clues as to what the poem may be about?

*Explain what the title may mean or what it tells you about the poem that you are about to read.
*What does the poem say? Who/What is it about?


(Find as much as you can about the author and about the poem, too. Read the prefacing information before the poem begins and read the questions that follow your poem. These may help you to understand what your poem is about.)
* What does the speaker imply?
*What figurative language does the poet use?

Attitude
Write about both the the tone of the author or speaker of the poem.
*Is the poet being light-hearted, serious, respectful, sarcastic, boastful, enthusiastic, dreamy, etc.?
Shifts
Note shifts/changes in speakers and in attitudes. (
The speaker may begin with one attitude but then change to a different one as the poem ends.
)
*Look for changes in:
Transition Words (but, yet, however, although, etc.)
Punctuation (period, dashes, colons, ellipses)
Setting (is there a change in time or location?)
Speaker (does the speaker change?)
Stanza divisions (could a change in stanza indicate something important – a change?)
Line length (is there an obvious change in line length?)

Theme
Determine what the poet is saying. The central idea of the poem.

*What does he seem to want the reader to know from reading his poem?

* What did his purpose appear to be?

*Is there a life lesson that the poet seems to want the reader to observe?
Title
Examine the title again, this time on an critical level. Your knowledge of the poem may change your opinion of the title.

*Now that you know the poem, does the title have greater significance?

*What does the title say to you now that you know more about what the poem is about?

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE POEM
*Who is the speaker in this poem?
*Who is the audience in this poem?
*What is the purpose of this poem?
*Is it an important purpose?
*Does the author achieve this purpose?

Literary Association
*What song, movie, book, or story comes to mind when you read this poem?
*Why does this other piece of literature remind you of this poem?
*What do they have in common?



Personal Association
*What does this poem remind you of from your own life?
