IMAGERY
There are more than one type of imagery. There is visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, kinesthetic, and organic. visual is when the writer uses imagery to create an picture in the readers mind. auditory is when the writer uses words that makes you think of sounds or music. olfactory is when the writer uses imagery to create a certain smell in the readers mind. Gustatory is when the author describes tastes. Tactile imagery appeals to the readers sense of touch. Kinesthetic imagery is temperature, movement, and feelings. Organic imagery is the feelings of the body.
Visual imagery is when the writer uses words to create images in the readers head. Some words that help visual imagery are picture, flash, bright, and other image describing words. Some visual imagery sentences are a sailing boat, a fish swimming, and tons more. Most of the time visual and auditory work together like if I said wind blowing through the trees. You hear and see wind blowing through the trees.
Olfactory imagery is the sense of smell. If I said the smell of freshly baked bread, what do you smell? What if I said Gasoline fumes, what do you smell? Olfactory imagery will work better with gustatory which is the sense of taste. Like if I said the marshmallow smells sweet, you can smell it and taste it. Some words that go with olfactory are sweet, stinky, odor, and a some others.
Gustatory imagery is the sense of taste. Some words used with gustatory are sweet, sour, bitter, salty, juicy, and more. Some gustatory sentences are the sweet banana, the salty taste of popcorn, and more. Gustatory imagery works with olfactory like if I said the fresh baked cookie tasted so good, are you thinking of how the cookie smells and tastes?
Tactile imagery is the sense of touch. Some words used with tactile are hardness, softness, hot, cold, wet, dry, and many more. Sentences that use tactile are The bed linens might just as well be ice and the clothes snow, and The water was cold and soothed my aching feet.
Kinesthetic imagery is movement, temperature, and feelings. Some words used with kinesthetic imagery are hot, cold, fast, slow, happy, scared, sad, angry, joyous, and many more! Sentences that use kinesthetic imagery are That blanket is warm or ouch! That glass is sharp!
Organic imagery is the feeling of the body. Some words used with organic imagery are hunger, thirst, fear, and fatigue, and more. Sentences that use organic imagery are I am so hungry! And I have been in this desert for 3 days I'm so thirsty!
