Connection to resources
I set up higher level students with "Bridges to College" and regularly designed lessons to support their goals of attending and succeeding in college.
Research, Outreach and Event Planning
I attended volunteer and intern fairs to recruit, was involved in the planning of several events and hundreds of hours of research for LGBT refugee rights, which cumulated in a presentation in May.
My favorite memory
My favorite moment this year, came this fall in an all woman US Civics class. It was around the election, and my class was quizzing me on the candidates. It worked in the lesson however, because this particular class session was designed to discuss the rights that all people living in America have.
These woman, who ranged in age, language, amount of education, and country of origin were thrilled to find out that ANYONE can write a letter to the president. My lesson changed course immediately. I handed out lined paper and asked the woman to write a letter. I showed them how to correctly format it. Taught them to word "Sincerely" and told them to get to work!
They were to ask Barack Obama a question, any question. When they were finished, I had them read their letters. They were all proud of themselves, and thrilled to be taking part in democracy, even thought they were not yet citizens. I sealed them all in an envelope and sent them off to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
While I was surprised that we never received a response, the lesson had a lasting effect on the woman, and from that point on, they were engaged in class with such empowerment. I have repeated the lesson a few times since, but never has it had the same effect as it had on that particular group of woman. It was truly, the most rewarding class I have had the privilege to teach.
Mission and History:
In each lesson, I made sure that I was using many different materials so that the students would have multiple opportunities to learn. Each lesson had at least two different elements.

The first lesson in each class, I made sure that the students felt comfortable with their new surroundings. To do this, I decorated and did a lesson with the classroom map.
As everyone introduced themselves, I drew a line from their home country to Massachusetts. This immediately made them feel welcome, and excited to learn where their classmates are from

BCCRD, Inc., committed to immigrant and refugee advocacy, strives to establish and provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services to refugees and immigrants who have resettled in the wider Boston metropolitan area. We aim to support and empower refugees as they rebuild their lives in the United States of America and help them become able participants in all facets of American life.
The Bosnian Community Center for Resource Development (BCCRD Inc.) is a nonprofit agency created in 1998 by a group of former -Yugoslavs and Americans to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services to the 7,000 to 8,000 refugees from the former Yugoslavia who have resettled in the greater Boston metropolitan area. The only agency in the region specifically designed to serve this population, BCCRD obtained its 501(c)3 status in March 2004; however, it has been a part of the Massachusetts Assistance Association Coalition since 1998, organized by the Commonwealth’s Office of Refugees and Immigrants (ORI).
