Student Athlete Misconceptions

Any form of test that requires all test takers to answer the same questions in the same way. It is scored in a “standard” or consistent manner, which makes it possible to compare the relative performance of individual students or a group.
o These test have put a lot of pressure on teachers and students to produce high-test scores.
o Teachers get pressured from the administrators.
o Administrators want the teachers to increase standardize test preparation leading up to test, but also teach the core standers of the class you should be teaching, then end any preparation for the Standardize test as soon as it ends.
o This causes a great stress for students because not only do they have to prep for standardize testing but they have to keep up with normal class work and tests.
o The tests are given for one main reason, which is so that the teachers and administrators can evaluate the school system, a schools program, or a particular students development.

According to Kimberly O’Malley’s article “Standardized testing. What is it?” published on researchnetwork.person.com:

The earliest records of this testing came from China, where they had to fill out examinations testing their knowledge of philosophy and poetry.

In 1905, French psychologist Alfred Binet developed a test of intelligence, which later was incorporated into a version of the modern IQ test.

By World War I Standardized testing was standard practice in school across America.

o Gives teachers guidance
o Gives parents a god idea of how their children are doing
o Allows students’ progress to be tracked over the years.
o Also provides an accurate comparison across groups.
“Childen with such special needs are usually entitled to receive additional services or accommodations through the public schools. Federal law mandates that every child receive a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment possible. To support their ability to learn in school, three restrictive Federal laws apply specifically to children with special needs:”
“Federal law that governs all special education services for children in the United States. Under IDEA, in order for a child to be eligible for special education, they must be in one following:
• Serious emotional
• Learning disabilities
• Mental retardation
• Traumatic brain injury
• Autism
• Vision and hearing impairments
• Other health impairments

 Requires all educational institutions, other than those operated by religious organizations, to meet the needs of children with psychiatric disorders.
 Prohibits the denial of educational services, programs or activities to students with disabilities and prohibits discrimination again all such students.

ADA (1990)
 A civil rights statute that requires that schools not discriminate against children with disabilities and provide them with reasonable accommodations. It covers all programs or activities, whether public or private, that receive any federal financial assistance.
• Reasonable accommodations include: unlimited tests, sitting in front of the class, modified homework and the provision of necessary services
• Those who qualify for Section 504 generally have less severe disabilities than those in IDEA
• Under Section 504, any person who has an impairment that substantially limits a major life activity is considered disabled

What is standardized testing and where did it come from?
o Students may in fact become too prepared for the future
o Causes a lot stress to the students and teachers
o For the students to do well and the teachers to prepare them well.
o Standardized test- scoring machines kill and maim more than 200 workers annually.
o Takes up time that could be used for other subjects.

2:Fast food consumption is rising
3:About 25% of kids don’t do any physical activity
4:Kids spend up to 5 hours daily watching TV
5:Obese children make poor students
6:The risk for heart disease jumps
7:Half of diabetic children are overweight
8:Sleep apnea is a growing threat
9:Health care costs are triple what they are for healthier children
10:Obese children will live shorter lives than their parents
Pros:
1: Educating children on what is healthy and what is not should be a required class due to its relevance to the real world
2: Showing the importance of good health may motivate kids to listen and take action if necessary
3: Most kids don't choose to do physical activity in there free time so it would be beneficial if they "have" to in school
4: Schools are doing their part to try and help stop this epidemic
5: Gym and health class teachers keep their jobs

Cons:
1: These classes could be replaced by more academic classes
2: These classes do not usually further educate the child
3: With more academic classes in place the children can advance further
4: More classes means more teachers would could result in more jobs
