A statement of facts tells your readers about the facts that inform the court's reasoning in a decision or the facts that are relevant to the reasoning in your correspondence.

Write a Statement of Facts
Using any case you've read in the last week, write a statement of facts that could be used in a memorandum to a senior partner at a law firm
Homework for October 3
write a statement of facts based on one of the cases on BBLearn (max 250 words)
post it to BBLearn and bring a hard copy to class on October 4
read PE - part one, chapter two
Takeaways: Garner, chapter 1
there are no universal key takeaways
order your material in logical sequence
use headings and consider the relationship between parts
Feedback on your letters
identify the parties and the nature of the dispute (set the way you'll refer to parties)
include all legally relevant facts, including facts you require to unfold your analysis

outline any assumptions
organize - often chronologically - in paragraphs

Grammar Tip
1. When you refer to the 1970s you do not need an apostrophe.
2. Really, use paragraphs. (Think: topic sentence, supporting evidence)

-statement of the legal issue before the court
-main conclusion (ratio)
-one reflection
-sign letters between your closing and your typed name
-comply with word limits
-choose easy to read font (12 point)
-use only B-numbers on future assignments
-use paragraphs and impose a logical order on what you write
