The Giver: The Importance of Memory
Transcript of The Giver: The Importance of Memory
"Why do you & I have to hold these memories?'
'It gives us wisdom.....Without wisdom, I could not fulfill my funtion of advising the Council of Elders when they call upon me.'" pg.111
--This is like Jonas's community's citizen's mind. The pieces of sticky notes repersent the memories that they have not received that would help them-- They're not capable of handling their own problems or pain due to this.
"Lowry was inspired to write The Giver after a visit to her aging father, who had lost most of his long-term memory. She realized that without memory, there is no pain—if you cannot remember physical pain, you might as well not have experienced it, and you cannot be plagued by regret or grief if you cannot remember the events that hurt you. At some point in the past the community in 'The Giver' decided to eliminate all pain from their lives. To do so, they had to give up the memories of their society’s collective experiences"
"Memory. Memory becomes your partner. You nurture it. You hold it. You dance with it."
"The worst Part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories NEED to be shared"
This quote is because it shows how memories are important. For example, they can be life lessons to help you make better choices or provide you with "experience" you need to make your choices. For example take the quote below:
"I started you with memories of pleasure. My previous failure gave me the wisdom to do that"
This would be an example of As the quote states: "my previous failure", it repersents memory. As it is previous (meaning before) it shows how the speaker contains the memory to fix his/her mistake
--As how Lois was inspired, this repersents it. It shows her aging father's memory. Without memory, the past does not exist--
The Five People You Meet in Heaven
-Sentence shows how memory can be a key thing in life & how important it is to us. Memory is like our soul mate-
This statment shows how memories give
and only the giver & receiver have it. It shows how the other citizens are poor of that and need the giver to help them for all their needs. They can't make their own life decisions. They MUST call upon another for the answer they seek.
I think the theme of the book is . I
think this because the whole story relates to how memory makes you
and . But The Giver and Jonas only have it (The memory). I also think this because of the reason Lois was to write the novel:

THEME Of The Giver
The book "The Giver" shows how a world would be without memory.
Everyone would need to make choices relating to their experiences. They don't have any clue about anything else like This shows they don't contain wisdom. They need The Giver to make their choices for them.
war, hunger or even love.
I think it is quite foolish though. Things would work faster that way wouldn't it.

Our memory can keep a whole way while camera, a scene which brings a memory back to our brain--
"Behaviour can be affected by events in previous generations which have been passed on through a form of genetic memory"
