What is this?
This innovation is a water purification system for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases.
Why is this necessary?
In developing countries it is common for sewage to pile up on the streets and then go into the local drinking water.
This contributes to more than 10% of disease in the world
An estimated 700million people in the world are drinking contaminated water
According to the world health organization - more than a million children under the age of five (in developing countries) die each year as a result to contaminated water and poor sanitation
How is this different?
Unlike other organizations and products, this water purification system doesn't just filter water, it converts all excess waste into energy thereby making this product self-sufficient as well as useful
Also past products and solutions have only benefited a small group of people e.g. the LifeStraw, however this system could provide whole communities with safe drinking water for a longer period, thereby clearly showcasing it's superiority and presenting this innovation as an improvement on one's before it
How does it work?
Innovators wanted to create something that could transform the sewage into something useful - their idea was to turn it into safe drinking water
The machine takes the waste from the sewer, then boils it, captures the produced liquid and processes the vapor into clean and safe drinking water.
The solid waste from the process gets incinerated within the machine which burns the waste, creates heat and generates a high-temperature steam which then fuels the process, making it self-sustainable.
Due to this growing issue, many individuals have tried to come up with different solutions to try and make water cleaner and more accessible.
One example of successful innovation:
Life straw is a portable filter designed to allow you to turn up to 1,000 liters of contaminated water into safe drinking water. The LifeStraw uses advanced hollow fiber membrane technology to remove 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria, including E. coli, Giardia & Cryptosporidium.

The machine has been launched in Dakar, Senegal
The business strategy is to sell the machine to local entrepreneurs which can purchase sewage –or the “fuel” to produce the water, which will fuel the economy of local communities.
Remember, the machine is not a drug or a medical device which can automatically cure disease but it has the potential to dramatically impact the health of the world’s population.
