The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games takes place in a nation known as Panem, established in North America after the destruction of the continent's civilization by an unknown apocalyptic event. The nation consists of the wealthy Capitol and twelve surrounding, poorer districts united under the Capitol's control. A past rebellion against the Capitol, in which a 13th district was destroyed, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected by an annual lottery to participate in the Hunger Games, in which the participants (or “tributes”) must fight to the death in an outdoor arena controlled by the Capitol, until only one individual remains. Katniss and Peeta are chosen from District 12. In the end realizing that Katniss and Peeta intend to commit suicide, the Gamemakers announce that both will be the victors of the 74th Hunger Games. She has now become a political target after defying her society’s authoritarian leaders so publicly. This book is the beginning of a great triogly. 'It's a gotta read'.
Winning the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return home to District 12, the poorest sector in the country of Panem. On the day that Katniss and Peeta are to start a "Victory Tour" of the country, she is visited by President Snow, who explains that he is angry with her for breaking the rules at the end of the last Hunger Games, which permitted both Peeta and Katniss to win. Snow tells Katniss that when she defied the Capitol, she inspired growing rebellion. This rebellion is " The Catching Fire". During the 75th Hunger Games Peeta, Enobaria, a District 2 tribute, and Johanna have been captured by the Capitol. After destroying the arena and resulting in her temporary paralysis. Katniss awakes now District 13, joined by Finnick, Beetee, and her mentor, Haymitch Abernathy. Alot has happen, in the end District 12 has been bombed and destroyed by the Capitol. Who survived ? And where is Katniss's family?

Katniss Everdeen — The narrator, main protagonist, and District 12's female tribute, a strong-willed teenager trying to survive in the Hunger Games. She lives with her little sister Primrose (nicknamed Prim) and her mother. After her father dies in a mine explosion, she hunts to provide for her family. She promises her sister she will try to win the games, and she is able to keep her promise by later winning the 74th Hunger Games alongside Peeta Mellark.

Peeta Mellark — Katniss' 17 year old fellow tribute, who later becomes her fiance. Peeta volunteers to take Haymitch's place in the Quarter Quell, wanting to keep Katniss alive. During the Quell, Peeta runs into a force field and his heart stops, but his ally Finnick Odair restarts it by using CPR. Peeta is among those captured by the Capitol at the end.
The male tribute from District 4. He won the 65th Hunger Games by using a net he wove himself and a trident he received as a gift from sponsors; District 4's trade is fishing. Finnick is described as being one of the most stunning, sensuous people on the planet. He is known for his attractive sea green eyes and bronze hair. During the Quarter Quell, a jabberjay recording of his one true love, Annie Cresta, screaming is used as psychological torture. Katniss was hesitant to make Finnick her ally, but he proved to be valuable when he helped Peeta off his plate and then administered CPR after he hit the force field. Finnick was a key person in the rebellion, as revealed to Katniss in the hovercraft at the end of the book.
Gale Hawthorne — Katniss' best friend and hunting partner in District 12. He is nineteen years old, fierce, hates the Capitol, and wishes to start an uprising as the people of District 8 did. Katniss must pretend that they are cousins to keep him alive, or President Snow could order to have him killed.

Katniss Everdeen now adjusts to a life in the underground District 13, which is the rebellion in Panem. Katniss eventually agrees to act as "the Mockingjay" a poster child for the rebellion but only on the condition that District 13's President Alma Coin promises to grant immunity to all of the past Hunger Games tributes, including Peeta Mellark, Johanna Mason and Annie Cresta, and to reserve for Katniss the right to personally kill Panem's President Snow once he is captured. But is President Coin playing her, too? In the end Katniss and Peeta have married and have two children. Maybe a happily ever after for all? The best book in the triolgy.

The Hunger Games trilogy takes place in a future time, in the totalitarian nation of Panem. The country consists of the wealthy Capitol, located in the Rocky Mountains, and twelve (formerly thirteen) poorer districts ruled by the Capitol. The Capitol is lavishly rich and technologically advanced, but the twelve districts are in varying states of poverty – the trilogy's narrator and protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, lives in District 12, the poorest region of Panem, formerly known as Appalachia, where people regularly die of starvation. As punishment for a past rebellion against the Capitol where twelve of the districts were defeated and the thirteenth purportedly destroyed, now one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts, from the ages of twelve and eighteen, are selected by lottery to participate in the "Hunger Games" on a yearly basis. The Games are a televised event, with the participants, called "tributes", are being forced to fight to the death in a dangerous outdoor arena. The winning tribute and his/her home district are then rewarded with food and supplies. The purpose of the Hunger Games is to provide entertainment for the Capitol and to serve as a reminder to the Districts of the Capitol's power and lack of remorse. But in the end another rebellion start's thanks to Katniss strong will to end the injustice and free the people. In the end she goes crazy and the slowly comes back to life from the nightmares.
