ions of lithium move through the electrolyte from the cathode to the anode and attatch to the carbon. During discharge, the lithium ions move back to the LiCoO2 from the carbon. ~Producer's transperancy in advertisments "Lithium extraction doesn't involve toxic waste [or] radioactive slag"(Fletcher) but it is mined out of the earth which still effects the earth in its own way. "I mean, we're going to put a big hole in the side
of that mountain," Chmelauskas said. "But you
have to weigh the net costs." (Fletcher) About 350 million rechargeable
batteries are sold in the U.S. but
a small portion of these batteries
end up recycled making up a
significant portion of heavy metal
contamination at solid waste facilities. 1991: Sony releases 1st

~Heed warning labels & terms of use 1800: the first battery was developed by Alessandro Volta 1859: the lead-acid battery(modern car battery) was developed by Gaston Plante 1879: The dry cell(now known as "primary" batteries) was developed by Georges Leclanche Lithium batteries, the newest family of batteries, were developed allowing higher degrees of chemical activity Now lithium batteries are being developed to be used in electric cars
