10: Measures of Intelligence
and Adaptive Behavior The Meaning of Intelligence Testing measurement of intelligence = controversial issue.
Chapter overview: a review of several measures of intelligence and adaptive behaviors to diagnose students with learning disabilities or emotional disabilities.
Group intelligence test to students in regular curriculum

"Special ed. teachers should possess an understanding of the interpretation if intelligence test results and their possible implications for educational planning." Alternate Views of Intellectual Assessment Traditional intelligence test = criticized for producing different results for different groups.
As a result=assessment personal+researchers look for diff types of assessment models and methods of determining intellectual ability.
"intelligence testing as we practice it today seems increasing out-of-step with the needs of tomorrow's schools (Canter, 1997, p.256)
The dissatisfaction with the traditional approach=
the exploration of additional definitions and techniques used to asses intellectual ability.
Gardner (1993) presents 7 types of intellectual ability.
linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, body-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal Litigation and Intelligence Testing the decreased use of the intelligence tests by some states and local education agencies was the result of the issues of the intelligence testing the the overrepresented minority groups (Bersoff, 1981)
A movement towards more objective testing practices is in the making due to the litigation involving the testing of intelligence as well as the info in the assessment sections of the IDEA.
