Transcript of Evangelization
Our Baptismal Call
Our Holy Father
"The proclamation of Jesus Christ and His Gospel, by word and the testimony of life to fulfill Christ’s command to ‘Make Disciples of all Nations."
Go make disciples!
Pope John Paul II
Redemptoris Missio (mission of the redeemer)
"The moment has come to commit all of the Church's energies to a new evangelization and to the mission. No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church can avoid this supreme duty:
To proclaim Christ to all peoples
767 "When the work which the Father gave the Son to do on earth was accomplished, the Holy Spirit was sent on the day of Pentecost in order that he might continually sanctify the Church….. the Church in her very nature is missionary, sent by Christ to all the nations to make disciples of them.”
“What is the purpose of the Church? What is the mission?”
2 Cor 5:18-20.
"All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are, therefore, Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us…"
1.) Those who have never heard the Gospel.
Catholics in the United States currently - 24% of population
What is the second largest group of Christians in the United States?
Evangelii Gaudium - ‘The Joy of the Gospel’
We need to speak boldly about Christ and the Gospel
and do it with joyful lives, engaging the world
852 The Holy Spirit is the protagonist, "the principal agent of the whole of the Church's mission." It is he who leads the Church on her missionary paths. "This mission continues … so the Church, urged on by the Spirit of Christ, must walk the road Christ himself walked, a way of poverty and obedience, of service and self-sacrifice even to death, a death from which he emerged victorious by his resurrection." So it is that "the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians."
"Christ . . . fulfills this prophetic office, not only by the hierarchy . . . but also by the laity. He accordingly both establishes them as witnesses and provides them with the sense of the faith and the grace of the word"
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
“A Christian alone is a Christian in danger!”
1 TIM 2:4
‘who wills everyone to be saved
and to come to knowledge of the truth.’…..Who is going to do this? God desires all to come to knowledge of the truth, but who is going to be the messenger?
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
1 Cor 9:14-16
In the same way, the Lord ordered that those who preach the gospel should live by the gospel….If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!
Decree of the Lay Apostolate
At World Youth day 1993
“Do not be afraid to go out on the streets and into public places, like the first Apostles who preached Christ and the Good News of salvation in the squares of cities, towns and villages. This is no time to be ashamed of the Gospel (cf. Rom 1:16). It is the time to preach it from the rooftops (cf. Mt 10:27). Do not be afraid to break out of comfortable and routine modes of living, in order to take up the challenge of making Christ known in the modern ``metropolis''.
It is you who must ``go out into the byroads'' (Mt 22:9) and invite everyone you meet to the banquet which God has prepared for his people. The Gospel must not be kept hidden because of fear or indifference. It was never meant to be hidden away in private. It has to be put on a stand so that people may see its light and give praise to our heavenly Father (cf. Mt 5:15-16).”
“I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security. I do not want a Church concerned with being at the center and then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures.”
Pope Paul VI
“Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers,
and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.”
“I might believe in the Redeemer,
if his followers looked more redeemed.”
“When the Church loses this apostolic courage, she becomes a stalled Church, a tidy, nice Church, a Church that is nice to look at, but that is without fertility, because she has lost the courage to go to the outskirts, where there are many people who are victims of idolatry, worldliness of weak thought, of so many things.
Let us today ask St Paul to give us this apostolic courage, this spiritual fervor, so that we might be confident. ‘But Father,’ [you might say], ‘we might make mistakes…’ ... ‘[Well, what of it,’ I might respond], ‘Get on with you: if you make a mistake, you get up and go forward: that is the way. Those who do not walk in order not to err, make the more serious mistake.”
The laity is responsible for evangelizing
Vatican II’s Decree on the Church’s Missionary Activity
"The laity's main duty, whether they are men or women, is the witness which they are bound to bear to Christ by their life and works in the home, in their social group, and in their own professional circle" (AG 21).
To teach in order to lead others to faith is the task of every preacher and of each believer.
-St. Thomas Aquinas
905 Lay people also fulfill their prophetic mission by evangelization, "that is, the proclamation of Christ by word and the testimony of life….”
2.) Those who have heard the Gospel and live the Gospel in their lives
3.) Those who have heard the Gospel, have been baptized, but have let the world affect them and they do not live a life where Jesus has any influence.
"Evangelizing is not proselytizing"
"a Christian must proclaim Jesus Christ in such a way that HE be accepted and received, not refused."
The Holy Spirit is the guide of the Truth
“Do the people in my life
that know me best…
know that I am Catholic?”
They are waiting for someone…
that can be you!
God needs the ordinary, sinful, regular person to speak the truth.
"Nobody cares about how much you know.....
..... until they know how much you care.”
Behave like you believe!
