What is genetically modified food?
GM foods come from organisms whose genetic material has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally.
What is Organic Farming?
It refers to agricultural production systems that do not use genetically modified seed, synthetic pesticides, or fertilizers.

It's different from GMO farming because it doesn't use anything genetically modified.
Are genetically modified foods safe for you to eat?
Genetically modified foods are safe to eat. They help yield more crops and resistant to herbicides or pesticides. Organic businesses want GMOs seen as bad because then their more expensive products will become popular. The public is going along with this because most of them do not understand what GMOs actually are and what they do. GMOs are a good thing as long as they are not harmful.
Are Genetically modified foods safe?
Against:
They are unhealthy. GMOs contaminate. They increase herbicide use. Genetic engineering creates dangerous side effects. The government is too lax about them. Independent research and reporting is attacked and suppressed. GMOs harm the environment. They work against feeding a hungry world because they do not increase yields. More than 60 countries around the world have restrictions or bans for GMOs.
Are Genetically modified foods safe?
For:
Create plants better resistant to weeds, pests, and other diseases. Bigger yields to create more efficient use of land, and less uses of herbicides and other pesticides. Food will have better texture, flavor, and nutritional value. Have a longer shelf life for easier shipping. Can create an essential, sustainable way to feed the world.
10 GM Foods
Soy - Resistant to RoundUp, a herbicide. This allows farmers to use more herbicide to kill weeds, but also makes the food loaded with more chemicals.
Corn - Resistant to pests and herbicides. Linked to weight gain and organ disruption.
Canola oil - Resistant to RoundUp. It’s considered one of the most chemically altered oils sold in the US.
Cotton - Modified to increase yield and resistant to disease.
Milk - Cows are given growth hormones to increase their yield. These hormones can be found in some milk and have shown to react inside the human body.
Sugar - Resistant to RoundUp.
Aspartame - Artificial sweetener is manufactured from genetically modified bacteria. It’s possibly linked to certain cancers.
Zucchini - Resistant to insects. Has been found in human blood, indicates it’s not being broken down and excreted.
Yellow squash - Resistant to insects and to viruses.
Papaya - Resistant to viruses and delays maturity so that it has more time to ship.
Why should GMOs be labeled?
We have the right to know what’s in our food. GMOs aren’t safe. The health risks are unknown. Consumers have the right to choose. A lot of other countries require labeling GMOs. It won’t cost the producer much, about a penny per day.
Obstacles for Organic Farmers
Profitability is low because food prices are low and land is expensive.
Farming organically on an industrial scale is difficult.
There are many conflicting ideas of what organic means.
Organic certification is exclusive.
Why Shouldn't GMOs be labeled?
They don’t need to have special warning labels. GMOs are a good thing. Labels will make people prejudice and more likely to spend more to buy organic products, without the label. The organic food industry wants the labels so that they can flood the market with their pricier product.
School Lunches can use GMOs.
What are CSAs?
CSAs are Community Supported Agriculture. They allow city residents to have direct access to high quality, fresh produce grown locally by regional farmers.
