Naturalis Historia Background
one of the largest works that has survived since Roman times
encyclopedic recording of natural history in ancient Rome
much of it was composed at night when Pliny had time to write
dedicated to Titus, future Emperor of Rome
Naturalis Historia
not similar to a modern day encyclopedia
animal, vegetation, and mineral categories are used to describe nature
topics included things such as botany, zoology, agriculture, and more subjects
Effects on Modern Day
Pliny wrote about his own experiences
Pliny used other experts' works as well
one of the first comprehensive encyclopedias
Born- 23 AD
Died- August 25, 79 AD in Pompeii
Family- no wife or children, Pliny the Younger was his nephew
