Précieuses By Kayleigh Hart and Emily Ingram The Affect on the Arts Conditions Men Cyrano de Bergerac Fairy Tales Madeleine de Scudéry Précieuses Les Précieuses ridicules More about the women Definition ~ A group of seventeenth century literary women of France who affected an extreme care in the use of the language. ~The précieuses were proper and defined women in France who were valued and precious because they embodied refinements in the French literary style called préciosité. ~ This play is translated to "The Affected Ladies" and was written by Molière. This comedy hurt the women's progress in developing the language because of the negative connotation associated with the men's thoughts of feminism expressed in the play. ~ The men were very angry about this refinement because women said that their beauty should be expressed through Platonic love. Platonic love means that the love of women should not be through physical love but through spiritual or ideal beauty. Most men were not satisfied with this and scorned the literary refinements. ~ The précieuses rewrote the fairy tales, so that they included their feminist ideas. In each rewritten tale, the men were recreated as gentlemen by birth and never mistreated the women. This style of writing eventually led to the first variant of "Beauty and the Beast" by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. Charles Perrault was another author influenced by this divergence from typical folk traditions in fairy tales. ~ This lady was the author of several romance novels that first reflected the précieuses. It pertained mostly to the female audience and was frowned upon by most men because they were filled with feminine elegance and the perfect amount of behavior. It was this literature that affected the rest of the arts that we mentioned. ~ This play, written by Edmund Rostand, shows little resemblance to his life, but he incorporates the précieuses' views and ideas into the female character Roxane. This shows the women's affect on the arts because their views were used in a play written by a man. ~ Men were the main reason that women had little freedom because they ran society and created and put the laws into effect. This restricted the précieuses and when they spoke out the men were shocked. The Men Money and Social Classes ~ The women of the précieuses were in the middle class at the time and therefore didn't have a lot of money in order to expand and share their ideas publicly. Their behavior was timid and they had limited freedom of speech because of social class restrictions. -What bound their behavior and freedom- ~ Government bound the women through their laws saying that it was not appropriate for women to speak their minds and participate in important social gatherings. ~ The précieuses affected art including fairy tales, plays, and more. Because their ideas were recorded in Romance novels, other writers were able to read and then incorporate the women's ideas into their own writing. Works Cited ~ "Google Images." Google.
