"Using iPads as Communication Devices"

Professional Development Workshop
This instructional event is an 8 hour professional development workshop presented to Special Education teachers currently teaching non-verbal and early-emergent verbal students on the autism spectrum.
Day 1, Hour 1: Intro to iPad Navigation
Hands-on guided exploration of the iPad and general settings and functions, including password protection.
Day 1, Hour 2: Navigating Proloquo2Go
Students will learn to navigate prefabricated menu boards and sub-menus, how to select vocabulary and produce voice output.

The goal of the instruction is to train Special Education teachers on both the maintenance, upkeep and programming of iPads powered by Proloquo2Go application software as well as training them to teach their students to use the technology in order to communicate.
Attendees will learn to program devices for the specific needs of individual students as well as how to teach students to effectively communicate using the technology.
Scaffolded navigation of the App Store, including setting up an account and searching/installing applications.
Students will learn how to create an updated backup of Proloquo2Go and store/retrieve it in the cloud.
Day 1, Hour 3: Customizing Proloquo2Go
Students will learn to add and delete folders and buttons, navigate cascading folders, use SymbolStix and photos when creating new boards/buttons, and customize board/button size.

Students will...
learn to create their own cascading folders (with and without sound output)
create customized buttons specific to students' likes/interests
learn to adjust application pronunciation of specific words based on phonetic spelling

Students will learn through engaging in behaviorism and direct instruction/roleplay as teacher and student. Learners will work in dyads in order to play both roles.

Day 2, Hour 6: Direct Student Training

Day 2, Hours 7-8: Using AAC in the Classroom and Beyond
Students review previous learning, discuss with other learners questions and/or problems they have, as well as learn to speed-program on-the-fly as conditions change across educational settings.
Students will be added to a private Facebook group dedicated to those who have completed the training in order to extend their learning and support beyond the instructional event.
