Transcript of Why you should hire me to be your science writer & editor!

Why I Should Be Your Science Writer & Editor!
I have a passion for both science & writing
...communicating and sharing scientific knowledge with others
That scientific literacy is important for everyone, and not just for those within the scientific community.
Science is too exciting and fascinating to not share what we know with others.
People should be able to make informed decisions about their bodies, health, and lives.
Because I believe...
That through promoting scientific understanding and knowledge, we can create a healthier, happier, and more responsible and aware society that has a better grasp of the world we live in.
There is too much misleading, confusing, contradictory, inaccurate, and false information available in the media. People should have access to reliable and trustworthy information.
So why am I a great candidate?
I have a BSc from University College Roosevelt (Utrecht University) in Pre-Med.
Meaning that I took courses such as:
Molecular Pathology & Genetics
Molecular Cell Biology
Cognitive Science
Human Physiology
& many more!
I also worked as a Research Assistant
I worked together with a research group studying consumer perception of the beneficial effects of probiotics
researched how companies advertise their products containing beneficial microbes
surveyed consumers about their perceptions of probiotics & their shopping habits
published findings in a peer-reviewed journal, 'Beneficial Microbes'
2013 Mar 1;4(1):117-21. doi: 10.3920/BM2012.0050
I did an Academic Internship on Alzheimer's Disease
the goal was to develop a more sensitive and specific EEG test that could be carried out in a local hospital to detect Alzheimer's in its earlier stages
analysed EEG data from the pilot study in order to come up with an improved experiment
did an extensive literature review on the P300 event-related potential, focusing on the P3a and P3b sub-components
However, I ideally want a career in both science writing and scientific research. I especially love Neuroscience & Psychiatry so next year I hope to do a MSc in Neuroscience.
Especially for...
So what about my writing & editing experiences?
Currently, I'm doing a distance learning BA in Philosophy with the University of London,
While doing so, I'm living in Berlin where I'm working as a freelance writer.
For 3 semesters I was the Editor in Chief of my college newspaper, 'Tabula RASA'
Created the Editorial Guidelines & Policy
Doubled the number of issues published per semester
Improved written content & quality from a rated 4/10 to 7/10 (as indicated by student surveys)
Instigated the revamping & re-designing of the newspaper

Throughout my entire undergraduate studies, I was a journalist, editor, and occasional designer for 'Tabula RASA'
I edited the following newspaper sections:
Arts & Culture
UCR (Academic Affairs)
Current Affairs
And wrote articles on a wide variety of topics:
& many more!
I was also Sub-Editor for one year and a General Board Member for another year at my college's undergraduate academic journal, 'Ad Astra'
I was primarily responsible for editing the science papers.
In my last year at UCR, I founded and set-up my college's first creative writing & arts journal, 'RAW (Review of Arts & Writing)'
In the summer of 2012, I was the Editorial Assistant to Prof. Dr. Clement in helping him edit a book on music in Zeeland throughout the ages. (To be published in 2013/2014)
