Stratigraphy of the Grand mesa By Celia Egghart and Jared Fowler Plate techtonics of the Mesa A fault line of the Mesa is the Redlands Fault. It lies underneath the monument, and affects both of these land masses. The fault pushes the mesa up and creates the mountain. Layers are made over eons and periods of time. And we use relative dating to judge how old the layers are, based on how old the layers around them are. First Layer: Basalt lava Basalt is the top layer which can be proved using the law of superposition which means that basalt is the youngest layer on the mesa. This layer was formed by a fissure that had leaked lava. Note: This is very extreme and did not explode this way. Second Layer: Wasatch (tertiary shale) Wasatch shale is formed by sediment carried by ancient oceans that were formed in the Eocene Epoch period in the Cenozoic Era. This is the era that took place from 34 million years ago to 56 million years ago. This is the time when the first mammals had appeared. Which are the index fossils found in this layer. Species in the Mesozoic such as dinosaurs suffered from a mass extinction. 3rd Layer: Ohio Creek Conglomerate Conglomerate rocks are sedimentary. It forms when sediment of rounded clasts grow. This can only be carried by water, especially rivers and creeks, which is where the Ohio Creek part comes in. It was formed in the early tertiary period, when the Cenozoic era is. 4th Layer: Tertiary shale. Tertiary shale is formed by oil leaks and also from the same way as the Wasatch shale, by being carried by a large body of water. This shows the layers of the mesa that were underwater over a period of time. This took place in the Paleozoic era. Which is where the Cambrian period is. 5th Layer: Sandstone Sandstone is a sedimentary rock and was formed in a period of dry land before a water layer came over it. 6th Layer: Mancos Shale Mancos shale is the oldest layer and beneath it, is a pocket of natural gas. Mancos shale was formed on the mesa in the Upper Cretateous Era. Note: there are only certain layers of tertiary shale By Celia Egghart and Jared Fowler
