How does the sun's energy transfer to the fuel tank of our cars? Has this question ever crossed your mind or did you think it was just gasoline. The sun plays a big part on the power of our cars. Without the sun we'd probably be walking everywhere.
Make a list of different things with energy transformations you experience everyday. How does the sun play a part in those.
To power our cars we use gas. Coal, oil, and natural gas are all fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are made from prehistoric plants and animals. The energy in these plants and animals come from the sun.
The transformation begins with the process of photosynthesis. During photosynthesis plants absorb the solar energy from the sun and use it to grow. The plants then store the solar energy in their roots, fruits, and leaves and it then becomes chemical energy. The animals get this energy when they eat the plants and store it in their bodies.
The energy from the plants and animals is then transferred to the fossil fuels which is then used in the fuel tank of a car. The chemical energy now becomes thermal and mechanical energy.
In conclusion the sun is the basic source of energy to power our cars. The solar energy from the sun is transferred to chemical energy during the process of photosynthesis. Then the chemical energy is transferred into thermal and mechanical energy when it is used in the fuel tank of our cars.
