Ancient Roman Influences on Modern Society By: Bryce Coleman Columns Columns were very popular in ancient Rome architecture. Most of the buildings in Rome had them to support beams or arches, but they were also for style and decoration. Basic columns were made out of stone or sand, and more unique columns were handmade using chisels, hammers, and saws. Modern time columns are used for the same purposes, but are also different. Modern columns today are made out of clay and marble. Now columns are used for important buildings too like the White House, Capital, and Museums. Just about everywhere you go you see columns! Publius Aelius Hadrianus built the Pantheon in 126 AD. This building started out as a temple to honor all of the Roman Gods. The structure of the building is known for being the biggest concrete dome in the world, and it still remains today. Inside the dome were statues of their gods that they worshiped. The Pantheon has influenced many libraries, and museums in the world today with its dome-like structure. Domes back then were made out of iron and tin. Today domes are made out of marble, clay, and stone. They are also used in governmental structures like the Capitol. They are also used in museums and libraries, and are used for a more decorative purpose. Over the years, domes have become very popular in Europe and the U.S. Roman theater of Amman The Roman Theater of Amman was built by the emperor Antoninus Pius in the second century of AD. It was made with stone and granite. Like the Colosseum, the theater of Amman was used for entertainment purposes, just not violent sports. In the theater, they would have people perform plays in front of a crowd. Because of the steepness of the theater, it was quite easy for the audience to hear the actors. This theater has brought a ton of influence to our modern world. Today we have theaters around the world where people sing, act, or watch movies. The theaters today are inside, and are not as big as the theater of Amman. Theater is also very popular in the United States, and many other countries. In the morning, Romans ate a meal called “ientaculum”, and it was served at dawn. They ate a small lunch at 11 am, and big dinner which was called a cena. It was the main meal and served at evening. Today, we have a meal in the morning from dawn to around 10:30 am called breakfast. We have another meal at around 11 to 12 called lunch, and another meal in the evening called dinner. As you can see, ancient Roman meals were very similar. A.R. Romans didn’t always have to wear togas. When they did, they would wear them for special events like cenas. If you were a poor citizen, you only had one toga, but if you were rich, you would usually have multiple togas. Togas have really influenced modern clothing. Today people can show their personality through their clothing and express themselves. A.R. Grapes were the most popular fruit in the dessert dish. Bakeries have also made muffins, bread, sweet buns and cakes. These were very popular in the first century AD. All these fruits are very popular in our modern society, and we can find them in food markets, stores, and marts. A.R. The drinks were normally mixed with water immediately before served because they didn’t have controlled fermentation making it very easy to get drunk. Over the years, they have come up with many different flavors in wine. Many flavors of wine today are made from fruit like grapes, peaches, and other chemicals. The Romans and Greeks were one of the first to discover wine, but today’s wine has controlled fermentation A.R. They were to attract attention and show what their status was. Certain classes wore certain rings, like the Senators and the Bureaucrats. They wore golden ring that had a big gemstone or roman glass. Today, most people wear rings to show that they are married. The woman would wear a ring with carrots, and the man would just wear a ring with no carrot. Rings have made a big influence, but they are not used for the same reasons. A.R. They were usually worn by women, and were the shape of coiling snakes. To them, the shape of bracelets looking like a coiling snake symbolized immortality. They had no use, so they were used for decorative purposes just like we use bracelets today. Today, bracelets are made from many different sizes and shapes, and different designs to them. Jewelry has changed over the years and is still changing. A.R.
