Understand and evaluate the demographic factors that influence citizens to differ from one another in terms of political beliefs and behaviors. Many Socioeconomic characteristics play a role in influencing a person's political beliefs. These factors include race, age, sex, income level, and religion. Race: Usually the white majority will favor conservative beliefs and racial minority groups will be more liberal. This is because racial rights of the minorities have traditionally been a liberal platform. For their respective time periods, abolition, and civil rights were rather liberal ideas. In today's context the Democratic party tends to favor affirmative action while the Republicans are against it. This is why the Democratic party recieves a large percentage of the racial minority vote, and the Republicans rely on the white vote. Age: It seems as though the older you get the more conservative you become. This is not because your belief system changes, but because the party platforms change. Our country is progressing, and what was yesterday's liberal could be today's conservative. Older people usually want to keep things the same without many changes or progression, and this is a firmly conservative belief. Sex: Traditionally males are more conservative than females. This can also be traced back to minority rights. Feminism and progressing women's rights have always been on the liberal platform, while the conservatives have typically opposed these progressions. Today, abortion is the hot topic. Conservatives are fighting to give rights to the unborn and take away a womans choice, while liberals are fighting to put the choice in the hands of the woman. This is why a larger percentage of women vote for the Democratic party when compared to the percentage of men who vote for the Democrats. Income Level: It would make sense that the lower class and lower-middle class would favor the Democrats, while the Upper class would favor the Rpublicans. The reason being that raising taxes for the rich, adding more social programs, giving benefits to the poor, and distributung the wealth more evenly are all liberal beliefs endorsed by the Democratic party; while tax cuts for the rich, the deletion of social programs, and putting 2% of the citizens in control of 50% of the wealth are ideas supported by conservative Republicans. Religion: In America, fundamental christians are very conservative, while less religious and non-religious people tend to be more liberal. The Republicans support public prayer and putting Christian ideals in the government, which is why very religious Christians support them. On the other hand, the Democrats support the first amendment right of freedom of religion and seperation of church and state.Full transcript
