The Berlin Boxing Club By
Robert Sharenow Setting Characters Karl Stern Summary Karl Stern is a regular Teenager. He is an Artist, an older brother and a Jew. He has the looks of an Aryan so he isn't bullied so much in school. One day the Wolf Pack (A Nazi Hitler youth group) pushes Karl down the stairs. Famous German boxing Max Schmeling visits Karl's dad’s art studio. Max sees that Karl was beaten at school. He offers him boxing lessons in exchange for a free picture of Georg Grosz. Karl immediately says yes, but his dad says his family needs the money. Max tells Karl that he can start boxing in the Berlin Boxing Club. Karl trains hard every day doing the 300 like Max told him to do. The 300 includes 100 pushups, 100 sit-ups, 50 pull-ups, and 50 minutes of continuous running. Karl becomes tougher every day. Karl starts to box in tournaments and notices that he has a very long reach. One day the principal leaves Karl's school. A Nazi supporter becomes the schools new principal. Then the next day the new principal embarrasses all the Jewish kids at school and makes fun of them. Then he kicks them out of school. Life doesn't get any easier from there. He now has to go to a Jewish school. Then Karl’s family losses his house because of the new laws. Now they have to live in a wall less art gallery. And if that isn't bad enough his Uncle Jacob just died. Worse there are new laws for the Jewish. 1. The German Police are no longer responsible for protecting the Jewish. 2. Jewish people are no longer allowed to stop in regular store or allowed to own a shop. Karl enrolls in a big boxing tournament, “The Berlin Boxing Tournament.” Karl does great until he sees his bully from his old school. Geertz thins Karl is still the weak kid that he used to know. Karl dominates Geertz in the first round. One of Geertz’s friends tells the judge that Karl Stern is Jewish. Karl’s is immediately disqualified. Now the streets are even more dangerous for Karl Stern and his family. Now Nazi soldiers march the streets day and night. One day they break down Karl’s door and march right in. Karl knows that his dad was once in the army. His dad fights of everybody except his is stabbed with a shard of glass. Max takes Karl’s dad to the hospital, while Karl and his sister hide in Maxes hotel. Karl’s parents decide to send Karl to America. http://www.google.com/imgres?q=1930+boxing+gloves&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1024&bih=571&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=1wdMaKCF2lDguM:&imgrefurl=http://www.antiqueathlete.com/vintage-boxing-gloves.shtml&docid=ZtNDLpUIxJJ1ZM&imgurl=http://www.antiqueathlete.com/antique-boxing/vintage-boxing-gloves-ken-wel.jpg&w=423&h=437&ei=KhB_ULuGB4-k8gSL8IG4Dw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=97&vpy=134&dur=2473&hovh=228&hovw=221&tx=113&ty=251&sig=110181743796523393808&page=1&tbnh=138&tbnw=134&start=0&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:71 Max Schmeling A Scrawny Jew that has a tough time defending him self.
