Early Life He was born on 1733 in Anson County, North Carolina. As a young man he moved from North Carolina to Wilkes County, Georgia and did not know how to read or write. He married Hannah Harrington around 1763. They named Clarke County after him. Being wounded several times, he lead the American militia to victory over the British at the battle of Kettle Creek in Georgia.
