THE LEAVES
THE STEM
The
stem
connects the
rots
with the
leaves
.

Water and minerals
go from the roots through the stem , to the leaves.

Food goes from the leaves , through the stem, to
other parts of the plants
.
THE ROOTS
PLANTS
They contain the reproductive organs of the plant.
LEAVES are where the plants make food. They take
sunlight
and
oxygen
from air to create
chlorophyll
.
Some trees have
leaves all the year
and they are called,
EVERGREEN TREES
.
Others
lose their leaves in autumn
and grow new in spring, they are called
DECIDUOUS TREES
.

what are the characteristics of plants?
They anchor the plant to the ground.
They absorb water and minerals from the soil.
Plants are living things.
They have the following characteristics

They need
water
,
air
,
sunlight
and
minerals.
They make their
own food.
They form
seed
to reproduce.
They
cannot move by themselves
, but they
react
to the environent.
They have these main parts:

What do roots, stems and leaves look like?
Roots can be thick or hairy.

Carrot plants have a thick root.

Onion plants have hairy roots.
The Stem can be woody or green
Woody

stems are hard and rigid, for
example, the stem of an
oak tree
.
Green
stems are soft and flexible,
for example, the stem of
wheat
.
LEAVES
Leaves have two parts:
Blade
Stalk

Leaves can be different shapes:
Entire leaves
, like Lemon leaves.
Dentate leaves
, like Chestnut trees leaves.
Serrate leaves
, like Apple tree leaves.
Needle leaves
, like Pine tree leaves.
HOW DO SEEDS AND FRUIT FORM FROM A FLOWER?
Some plants have
flowers
.
The flowers contain the
male
and
female

reproductive organs
,
corolla
and
caliyx
.
Seeds
form inside the flower.
The
fruit
forms around the seeds
The corolla
is formed by petals.
It's colourful to attract insects.
It protects the reproductive organs
The stamen
is the male reproductive organ
The calyx
is formed by
sepals
.
It protects the rest of the flower.
The carpel
is the female reproductive organs.
The anther
contains
pollen
grains
The stigma
is sticky to catch pollen grains.
The ovary
contains the ovules.
The pollen grain
and an
ovule
join to make a seed.
The ovary
developes into a
fruit
There are
hard fruits
, for example,
nuts
There are also
fleshy fruit
, for example pears or
quinces

Seeds
HOW CAN WE CLASSIFY PLANTS?
There are many different types of plants. According to its type of stem, a plant can be: a
tree
, a
bush
or a
grass
.
Trees
are plants with a woody stem, called a trunk
The
branches
grow out from the trunk high above the ground.
They support
leaves
, the
flowers
and the
fruits
.
Evergreen trees
always have leaves because they make new leaves every year.
Decidious tree
lose all their leaves in autumn. New leaves grow in spring
DO YOU
KNOW?
Trees grow
slowly
.
Some
pine trees
live for thousands of years
.
Some trees like a
Gigant Sequoia
or a
Baobab
are taller than 50m.
Some trees, like
Mexican Cypress
, are wide as a building.
Bushes
, like lavender, are plants with
woody stems
but without trunk. The branches grow near the
ground
.
Grasses
, like wheat or clover, are small plants. Their stems are
green, soft and flexible
.
WHAT ARE PLANTS USED FOR?
Since ancient times we have used plants as food.
We have also used wood from trees as fuel, for building and to make paper.
We get
cotton
from the flowers of cotton plants. This is used for make clothes
We get
wood
from the trunks and branches of trees.
This is used to make buildings and furniture, and to make paper.
We get
cork
from the trunks of some trees. This process damages the tree.
We eat a variety of
fresh fruit
.
We eat many meals with vegetables
We cook with
spices
and
herbs.
Cereals like
wheat
are used to make bread.
Plants are our main source of
food
. We eat different parts of plants: roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds.
Different parts of some plants, like camomille, are used to make medicines.
Every day scientists discover new uses for plants. It is important for the future to protect plants and research new uses.
DIfferent parts of some plants, like roses or orange blossom, are used to make perfume, soap and cosmetics.
Deciduous forest
Evergreen forest
Lobed leaves
, like Oak tree leaves.
Palmate leaves
, like Maple tree leaves.

of a plant?
