To be able to predict the results of a given reaction

If a reactive element comes into contact with the compound of a less reactive element a chemical reaction may take place. The less reactive element is removed from the compound and replaced by the more reactive element.
For example, if chlorine is added to a solution of potassium bromide, the bromine is replaced by the chlorine forming potassium chloride. Bromine is formed at the same time and can be detected by its colour.

With metals?
Displacement reactions can involve a metal and a compound of a different metal. In a displacement reaction:
a more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its compounds
Displacement reactions are easily seen when a salt of the less reactive metal is in the solution. During the reaction:
the more reactive metal gradually disappears as it forms a solution
the less reactive metal coats the surface of the more reactive metal
For example, magnesium is more reactive than copper. When a piece of magnesium is dipped into blue copper sulfate solution:
