Beyond Z
talent + technology
For those of us who live in the most precarious places in this country, our destiny can be determined by a single stumble down the wrong path, or a tentative step down the right one.
- Wes Moore, “The Other Wes Moore”

vision
Our next generation of global leaders can emerge from everywhere.
our theory of action
short term
long term
nexus between talent and tech
recruiting diverse sponsors
providing students with positive peer networks and personal motivations thru valuable experiences
using tech to level access
high-level engagement with ongoing role models
coaches would become informed advocates
participants rise to become extraordinary leaders in the foremost positions
they are equipped to lead from within many communities
they are able to change the conversation of what is possible
STUDENT VOICES
Beyond Z would be a good program for me so I can explore my curiosity and learn new things.
Leadership is one of the most important skills in life and I believe this program will take me far in life. That is why I want to be part of Beyond Z.
I would also like to learn how to be a better leader for myself and others. Being a leader is a huge part of an adult like and so I would like to learn how to be the best leader I can to help me throughout my education life and adult life. This will allow me to become a better person overall.
I want to be part of Beyond Z because I want to be able to try new things. I want to experience doing things that I know will help me out later in life. Going places meeting people would make see things in a different perspective.
OUR PILOTS
discover, develop, connect
launched Jan/Feb 2014
120 student participants
12 leadership coaches
4 pilot sites
discover, develop, connect
LEADERSHIP COACHES
hand-selecting a set of people who we think will be great
developing a more streamlined and rigorous selection and training process
Challenges
our students don't have the tools to navigate the program
in DC, kids don't have access to tablets to ensure fluency in keyboarding
in East Palo Alto, students learning to code don't have laptops to take to their upcoming hack-a-thon
Beyond Z is a platform where students come to gain real experiences that are measurable over time.

BOARD VISION
4-6 MEMBERS (TO START)
BEYOND Z + TFA
We will likely stay on TFA's payroll and benefits until the end of 2014 calendar year (because there are a lot of disadvantages to switching in the middle of a year). Based on the size of our staff at that point, we will weigh the pros and cons of running these HR functions in house or outsourcing to an external organization (co-employment model).
We will likely separate our finances (except payroll) from Teach For America by either the end of the fiscal year (May 31,2014) or the end of the 2014 calendar year. We will likely use quickbooks and hire an external financial consultant/accountant to manage our books until we grow to a more significant size.
We are also looking into separating our technology and potentially seeking out alternative office space over the course of 2014.
OUR CORE VALUES
WHAT WE'VE LEARNED: there are many people who give to educational equity work, but many want to see how our pilot phase produces before donating

General “swag” items
these are the standard items that all swag/ grab-bags would typically have that we should likely include
Products of "cool"
as a new brand, an immediate way to make BZ “cool” to our students is to create a relationship between our brand and already “cool” brands
Culture-building pieces
things that allow kids to feel connected to one another as a part of this program, as well as bring their unique voices out
BZ
2.6 million boy scouts
500,000 boys playing AAU basketball
93,000 young people in the school to prison pipeline
8,000 African American students who scored 1200+ on the SAT
100,000: the lowest number of students we want to know are on pathways to promise

NEW YORK
5th Grade: Making
Students learn how to make their own projects in science, technology, engineering, and arts. Making is a do-it-yourself movement that focuses on hands-on, project-based learning and includes everything from robotics and programming to 3D printing and design. Students also learn about maker culture, which emphasizes self-reliance, collaboration, and production over consumption.
WASHINGTON DC
Students simultaneously participate in a Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship ("NFTE") program where they learn about entrepreneurship and business through project-based instruction. Through this program, students are introduced to concepts in marketing, negotiation and economics while they strengthen their math skills.
7th Grade:
Entrepreneurship
EAST PALO ALTO
Students participate in an in-depth leadership and coding curriculum across multiple schools. Students develop their leadership and build their networks through learning how to code their own website, connecting with popular tech companies and touring their offices, and creating a student community that will hear from experts in the industry from across the country.
9th Grade: Coding
COLLEGES
Students complete a 10-week leadership curriculum with hands on application to professional and extracurricular interests. We also provide students with our technology platform, which connects the Beyond Z community while leveling access to knowledge and social capital.
Leadership & Career Prep
We are passionate about DISCOVERING, DEVELOPING, and CONNECTING extraordinary, diverse young people who have the focus, drive, and talent to become experts and leaders in our world.

I joined Beyond Z because...
Student Voices
My favorite part is...
"I want to learn how to make a website."
"I like technology and I want to become a software engineer."
"the leadership day because it may just seem like fun, but you're actually learning how to be a leader."
"getting to learn CSS and JavaScript and the foundation of coding."
