What is the Red Terror?
The Derg vs The EPRP
Relation to 8 Stages of Genocide
First modern political party in Ethiopia.
Desired removal of Monarchy and Feudal system and forming of a Democratic Republic.
Became target of the Derg.
Around 250,000 deaths as a result of conflict with the Derg.
Cause of Ethiopian Civil War.
Led by Communist Mengistu Haile Mariam.
Committee consisting of the Armed Forces, Police, and Territoial army which controlled Ethiopia from 1974 to 1987.
Responsible for Red Terror.
Abolished by Mengistu to form the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
Anyone accused of being a member of the EPRP was arrested/ beaten/ killed without question.
Many innocents and uninvolved citizens killed over suspicion.
No right to a trial, treated like objects of amusement.
Newspaper fires and creative beatings.

A time period from 1976(74) - 1978 where Derg forces detained and murdered anybody who may have had ties to the EPRP (Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party.
Under the control of Communist Mengistu Haile Hariam after Emperor Haile Selassie is overthrown.
Country enters new age of communism.

September 12, 1974 - Derg takes control of Ethiopia
Feb 3, 1977 - Mengistu takes command of Derg
March 22, 1977 - Derg forces cleanse Addis Ababa of EPRP.
March 26 to April 2, 1977 - Girma Kebede executed for the death of over 33 people with 200 more planned.
August, 1977 - Derg hunts down MEISON (All-Ethiopia Socialist Movement) , most members captured or killed.
May. 2002 - Torturer Kelbassa Negewo caught and convicted in the U.S, serving life in Ethiopia.
January 2007 - Mengistu convicted of Genocide in absentia and sentences to death.
MG loaded trucks that patrol the streets
Over 30,000 to 500,000 violently killed + over 1 000 000 deaths by famine.
Able to perform city wide "sweeps"
