Transcript of Ocean Acidification

Ocean Acidification
“A reduction in ocean pH due to the uptake of anthropogenic CO .”
(Hofmann et al. 2010)

Saturation horizon
Supersaturated water depths (CaCO saturation state > 1) - shallower in colder regions
Undersaturated (CaCO saturation state < 1) - water depths
Due to decreased carbonate ions, saturation horizons are rising and calcium carbonate is dissolving at shallower depths
The following are only some of the forms of marine life that rely on sufficient levels of CaCO3 for proper development:
H O + CO
Saturation horizons are higher
Reduced carbonate ions - calcium carbonate dissolves at shallower depths
Two Forms of Calcium Carbonate
Coccoliths - most basic forms of calcifying marine organisms
