What do you imagine when you hear the word “fair”?… Well… for sure some people will say that it is something bright, inspiring and joyful. It`s absolutely true speaking about the Tool fair which was implemented by SCI Pool of trainers and facilitators with organizational support of SCI Austria 6-9 November in Vienna thanks to financial support of Austrian National Agency, Erasmus + Programme and Jucker Mauderli fund.
Inspiring Tool Fair had intriguing name “Non-formal education in the mirror” with important ambitious aim to foster creativity, participation, sharing, cooperation, mutual learning and innovation.
During the sessions and discussions 33 participants from SCI branches and partner organizations from Austria, Bulgaria, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russian Federation, Spain and Malaysia had a chance to have a look in the “Mirror” in order to see new tendencies, effective tools and instruments of non-formal education practices in different SCI organizations and countries.
Participants had four intensive days fulfilled by interactive activities and discussions connected with the present and future of non-formal education:
Direction of NFE recognition,
Types of NFE projects: features and perspectives,
Brain-friendly teaching,
Accelerated learning.
Everyone had a chance to run own sessions and share with others ideas, methods, instruments and points of view on non-formal education as a concept and practical approach towards the international youth work. Participants organized variety of sessions for example:
Creative cooperation: integration of different world techniques,
Explode your fears,
Introduction of human rights,
Theater of the oppressed.
“NFE mirror” allowed everyone not only to increase knowledge and gain new competences as a trainer or facilitator but also to receive constructive feedback from professional team of SCI Poll of trainers who did really great job to organize and implement the first Tool Fair.
Together with new skills and opportunity to reflect about present situation and future tendencies in non-formal education field participants created new project ideas for further dissemination of the Fair results and development of non-formal education approach in SCI organizations.
Participants and SCI Poll of trainers team are full of enthusiasm to develop the project results and work together on of the quality of non-formal educational projects implemented by SCI to create together bright future of non-formal education.

Generally very successful event for the future we might consider:
reflection groups in the evenings
to have a meeting for workshop leaders before the workshops start (to explain their responsibilities: gathering people, time managements, reporting etc.) – less babysitting for the workshop leaders, more responsibility for them
some 10 minutes of individual reflection after each workshop (“how can I implement this tool?”)
organize some space for feedback for workshop leaders (to be discussed how – a secret friend and a one-to-one feedback meeting afterwards?) But in general we are against a standardized way of giving feedback – it should depend on the workshop leader’s needs
some more structured reporting (can be posters but to have 1-2 people standing at the posters and ready to explain more on the workshops)
control that the posters are actually prepared
we might try with a bigger number of participants – after a discussion we think 40 would be the maximum if we want to keep the SCI style (that includes learning each other’s names, team spirit etc.)
very useful to invite several people per branch (not 1 for sure) – 2-3 per branch ideally (4 might be too much)
it would be good to agree on the framework of the event a bit earlier – e.g. the meal times, the length of the sessions, themes of the plenary sessions (e.g. 3 weeks before the event) – it would also give more time for the participants to prepare their workshops
we might work more on the evening programme (e.g. propose an evening with inspirations from branches: movies and other presentations on their projects)
we might consider making some kind of TP souvenirs for the participants (bag? ballpen? mug? badge?)
improve the dissemination of the results on Facebook and Members’ Area (e.g. by pre-preparing a folder on MA and uploading there files already during the event)
after a discussion on certificates, we agree giving out certificates might be good for events which are more related to knowledge gaining but not for Tool Fair – Youthpass is enough
Evaluation of the Tool Fair
How to attract branches to TP?
We should be not too upset with how it went with collecting partners for the Tool Fair. It is usual that branches are slow with answering.

If most of the branches do not have a person responsible for the training (as we discovered), we should be not too surprised that they do not react on general emails inviting to a training.

We should take into account that also in the future we will have to re-send emails to the branches.

Encouraging through personal contacts seems to be the most effective way.

Satisfied participants will spread the positive word about the Tool Fair which will help us the future.

We should underline the value of non-formal education within SCI so that branches are more aware of the importance to send people to such events.
