The frame that Mr. Clark, our protagonist, uses in his leadership style is the Structural Frame. Mr. Clark made all the rules and would not entertain anyone else's ideas.
Mr. Clark says "This is not a democracy!" & "My word is law!"
In the symbolic frame, Mr. Clark was himself a symbol of tough love. He also required ALL students to know the school song.
The ultimate goal:
To be a great leader!
Bolman & Deal (2008) state "Wise leaders understand their own strengths, work to expand them, and build diverse teams that can offer an organization leadership in all four models: structural, political, human resource, and symbolic" (p. 372).
Although Mr. Clark was ultimately successful by getting the students to pass the state test, he failed miserably at building relationships with his faculty. He was rude and unwilling to listen to them. Mr. Clark would have experienced more support from his staff if he had incorporated more of the Human Resource Frame. He needed to improve his relationships with his staff, and included them on some of the decision making.

There were not any discernible change strategies that were 100% positive. Although state test scores did improve, and some students and staff did marginally respect him, his leadership style still continued to be in question.
His main frame was the structural frame. He did not deviate from it too far. Most of what he was able to accomplish was done through intimidation of staff and students.
The structural frame was not the best choice for Mr. Clark to use. Had he tried to incorporate some humaneness, civility, and compassion into his leadership, he would have had the staff and students cooperating out of willingness not fear.
Theories that could have helped Mr. Clark:
David Cooperrider-Appreciative Theory
Mr. Clark could have implemented an encouraging, concerted, thoughtful, and positive system
Concerted efforts do more than get the job done, they change things
Paul Hershey and Ken Blanchard
Mr. Clark could have determined which of his staff needed to be treated on the maturity scale, and let them make contributions based on their strengths.
Should have been more of a mentor rather than a dictator
Should have treated his staff similarly to how he treated the students.
