A Strategy to write winning Goals
Your Goal Should Be Writing
Writing goals and to do lists is great, but writing smarter goals creates better goal success rate. The SMART Goals technique can also be used to develop learning objectives (step six in The A Game) and help you spend less time writing goals that don't work.
Here's what it stands for!
M is Measurable
A is Attainable
Write more effective goals by keeping this acronym in mind.
Writing goals that are too general is a frequent goal setting mistake. Writing specific goals increases the goal's focus and frequently makes the goal creater start thinking about how to achieve their goal.
Too General: Be more organized.
More Specific: Track all of the assignments in a planner.
A smarter goal includes some specific metric to determine whether the goal has been met, somewhat met, or not at all met.
Not Measurable: Work out at the gym more often.
More Measurable: Work out at the gym three times a week.
Even More Measurable: Work out at the gym three times a week for at least thirty minutes.
This is what it sounds like. The third key to writing smarter goals is writing ones you can complete. This might seem simple, but it's important to keep in mind how busy you are and other constraints that will make a goal impossible.
Unlikely to be Attainable: I will study six hours every night and work out for two hours every day.
More Attainable: Up to you! Based on what is realistic for your schedule and life...
This is all about why you care about this goal. You are relating the goal to why it matters to you and how this goal will improve some aspect of your life.
Not Relatable: Improve my GPA from a 3.4 to a 3.6.
More Relatable: Improve my GPA from a 3.4 to a 3.6, because I want a higher GPA to apply for grad school.
Words that will make a difference: so, because, thus...
This includes making sure that your goals have a time frame and come at a good time for you. So you probably shouldn't try a new study strategy during finals week. You also shouldn't commit yourself to 28 hours worth of goals per day.
Not Timely - I want to join a club.
More Timely - In the next month, I want to attend a club meeting and join their email list.
Hand Goals Activity!
Take a piece of paper and trace your hand onto the page.
Write a goal for each finger that represents a different length of time.
Pinky - One Month
Ring Finger - Three Months
Middle Finger - Six Months
Index Finger - One Year
Thumb - Three to Five Years
Try to keep the SMART Goal Strategy in mind: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relatable, and Timely.
